I am experiencing on my 03 1.9tdi (98K miles) some loss of oil from the small hole in the EGR on a regular basis. The car also expells rather alot of smoke under normal driving conditions. Having read some posts, I have not yet tried disconnecting the egr to see if this solves that issue.

The car drives fine and there is no loss of performance.

Does anyone have any idea what the issue may be?

    Thanks

    Hi there..

How much oil are you losing??

The EGR tend to start leaking at around 90k - 100k miles..

If its not a massive leak i would not worry about it as yet as they tend to last a lot longer... or you could replace it for around £90..

    Cheers

    Rick

Hi Blackps . The oil leak you are experiencing from the EGR was also leaking on my sons 1.9 passat. It also is emitting a lot of blue smoke . see post Blue exhaust smoke in the Passat 99-2005 forum. Hope you can find the cause and let us know . It getting a bit tiresome now .
    Regards

Blue smoke = burning oil... rather than leaking it..

    Cheers

    Thanks for the advice Rick.

The leak is not great and for a while now I have been weekly cleaning it off.

100K service is just round the corner so I will get it cahnged at the same time.

Reading some of the posts relating to EGR's and smoke, would a new one help reduce smoke or simply disconnect it?

    Cheers

Mine leaked through the two vent holes at the top of the EGR and dripped unto the exhaust / CAT and made a right old mess.

I simply pulled off the vac pipe and plugged the hose as an interim fix, which worked !

The interim fix is still in place almost 40k and an MOT later !

I've just cleaned mine out, it also leaks from the two wee holes either side under the vacuum part, and eventually drips onto the exhaust. Mines only done 56,000 miles. Its been leaking for about 10,000 miles now. Hope disconnecting it sorts the prob and doesnt cause any other probs!!

I disconnected my egr valve and plugged the vaccuum hose up and all was fine for a few miles, then the eml light came on. I reconnected the egr vaccuum hose and drove a few miles more and the light eventually went out thankfully. I've tried this a couple of times now and the same thing happens each time. My egr is leaking quite a lot now, having to clean up the mess weekly as its dripping everywhere. When I'm being followed at night I can see a fair bit of smoke under acceleration. Is this maybe a sign the egr valve is broken or faulty? The car has an avf engine and has done 60,000 miles and burns no oil.
