I am looking for some assistance here from you technos...
I have an Audi A4 B6 1.9TDI Advant, I have noticed that when I go under tunnels etc. the dashboard lights dim, as a reminder to turn on your lights. I thought that it must be wired for auto lights, I have recently purchased an Auto light switch for the headlights (A proper Audi one).
The problem is the lights come all the time, is their a code or something I need to do to make this work?

    Any help would be appreciated.

Adding auto-lights isnt as simple as adding a new switch, you also need the light sensor so the car will know when its dark!

When you pass through tunnels etc you are probably noticing that the speedo needles are illuminated - They are usually always illuminated - its just that you cant see they are on in daylight. This feature can be switched on/off using VAG-COM.

Issac cheers for the reply, The instrument cluster dims when I go into a tunnel and I have what i assume is the sensor on the top of the dash board.

I assume that as the instrument lights are going dim, that the feature is switched on?

Thanks for taking the time out to answer.

Ah yes you have a B6, slightly different to the B7. Yes I think as you mention they dim to remind you to turn on your headlights. Sounds like all is working as it should. Getting the car to turn the lights on for you wont be straightforward though sadly.

Thanks, much appreciated, looks like a trawl through the internet to find a magic way to do it or maybe a new thread. Thanks for the help...

I have seen a thread where someone has done this mod but I cant find the link at the moment. If I recall correctly he had to add the new headlight switch, sunlight sensor in the rear view mirror and a fair bit of additional wiring.

EDIT - Try this for lots of information

Apologies for the delay in getting back, that seems perfect, I will now go away and investigate, I may substitute the autodimming mirror for another photosensor with some clever electronics.

This will make good bedtime reading.

    Once again many thanks

you will need high line electrics control unit j519 for auto lights
a quick way of telling what spec j519 is to remove the light switch and disconnect it,if the headlights come on then you have high line and you can retro fit the auto lights/rain sensor

Just a quick note in this thread.

The dash lights will dim in a tunnel because the cluster itself has its own photosensor. It only controls the cluster brightness- nothing else.

Nothing to do with the Autolight sensor which controls whether headlights come on or not - that is a totally separate system.

The auto lights require highline j519 and the sensor in the mirror housing for the windscreen and the light switch
