    Hi all
    have a 2001 1.6 se
When it rains the front passenger carpet gets soaked, so much so sometimes there is a huge puddle there!
I took it to a VW specialist who said its a common problem with Golfs, he said he'd charge me £100 and he was sure it was the door seal on that side (he just had a cursory look at the car) and the door was filling up with water.
Anyway i opened the door myself and the seal looks fine. I hosed the door for a while to see if he was right but i couldnt see any water leaking through the door.
Anyway looking through this forum it seems it is indeed a common problem, but I can't find a thread where someones found a solution.
Theres lots of talk about checking the pollen filter drain - where is this, i couldnt seem to find it on the Golf (I know where it is on my passat).

    Please help
    thanks

Got a sunroof? Check the one-way valves on the drain tubes. I had this problem. No way would I spend £100 to fix it when you can do it yourself!

I had the same problem, found the pollen filter cover to be cracked and the filter drowned! A new cover (around a fiver) and filter and problem solved. I had to strip the whole interior though to dry out the carpets, that insulation underneath hold gallons!

Open the bonnet and look to where the passenger would sit. You'll see a filter housing right below the windscreen. It's under there, you'll need to undo the 4 screws that secure the cover.

I did google for a photo, but found this! It's a merkin vehicle, so it's on the wrong side, but this should help.

If you need a new filter they're around a tenner I think from Halfords. Or buy from a dealer, that's what I would do. For the sake of a tenner I always buy original parts.

    Hi

I have just found this exact same problem on our lasses 02 Bora. cracked pollen filter cover allowing water ingress on to the filter and in turn down through the fan housing which was soaking the passanger footwell. she had been complaining that the car would never demist aswell.

Hi dont know if you have already checked but I had this problem on the drivers side of my mk4 golf and found that one of the rubber wiring gromets was missing on the inside of the door shut (near the hinges of front door) and rain water was running down the inside getting in through open hole and into the footwell. Once I replaced this and dried out the carpet it has been fine ever since.

    Cheers Bulldog42

But it was definatly the pollen filter cover as the water was leaking in behind the glovebox.
