Should anyone be interested I have just fitted a Man Hummel Prvent 200 to my TDI golf and am in the process of doing the same to a TDI Beetle.
What I hear you ask is a provent 200?
It is a device designed to remove oil from the crank case ventilation fumes.
A problem with TDIs in particular is that after time the inlet manifold can become seriously blocked with carbon caused by the hot gasses from the EGR valve mixing with engine oil that finds its way into the induction system via the CCV. The system of removing oil from the CCV fumes as fitted by VW is not that great.
There is quite a bit of info out there particularly on American sites where these devices have proved extremely efective at eliminating these problems. There was also a feature recently in the Volkswagen Driver Mag relating to fitting a unit in a golf.
If anyone is interested let me know and I'll post more info. However be warned they are not cheap, expect to pay about £75 +vat. There is a filter that requires changing periodically so its not a fit and forget job. The units are also quite bulky so finding space can be tricky. I understand these were initailly designed for commercial applications where CCV fumes are vented directly to atmosphere, but future changes in regulations mean the fumes must be devoid of oil.

    Cheers, Jon.

    I'm very interested in this.

I have read a fair bit of info about this on the TDI-Club forum but would be very interested on how you sourced the bits here in the UK ?

Also some piccies would be great.

I purchased the Provent from Allparts Automotive, Aylesbury. The contact there is Barney Heal, a very nice man. Contact No. for Mann-Hummel is 01902 384000, they may be able to advise of outlet near to you. I found quite a difference in price shopping around, as mentioned I paid £75 +vat.

Here are some pictures of my installation.

I decided to mount the Provent next to the oil filter housing, for easy access. The bracket was fabricated from 1.2mm mild steel, I used M8 stainless steel nyloc nuts and bolts. The hose is 1" pond hose, about £1.20 a metre. I am not too sure how durable this will be, time will tell.
There is a drain underneath the provent, this can either be fed back into the sump, or periodically drained. The last picture shows a drain **** on the end of the clear 1/2" pipe attached to the drain. This leads down to the undertray, and out of an existing opening.
To connect the hose to cam cover and induction system I used the existing pipe. I found a couple of points wher the outside diameter of the pipe was about an inch, enabling me to use 1" pond hose without any reducers.
The whole thing still fits under the plastic shiled that fits over the engine without having to make any cut outs.

I have ordered some clips from VW to hold the hoses away from existing pipework to prevent chaving, at present the hose is cable tied as a temporary measure. I use rubber from old innertubes as additional protection, and also put a lay of this between the bracket and the oil filter housing.
In addition I removal all the induction system an cleaned out the oil residue, the intercooler had a substantial amount of oil that had collected in it. I also removed the inlet manifold and EGR and gave these a good clean with carb cleaner.

Does your beetle not have the Air conditioning line that runs right next to the oil filter housing?

I want to install one of these in my TDI beetle but I have a hard rubber and aluminium line that runs right next to the oil filter housing.
