    Hi,
Mobil 1 is the synthetic oil period. If it claims that is to 507-00 then I would be inclined to go with it. I will warrant that you would not be able to tell the difference to any other synthetic oil with regards to performance. If it is cheaper then you cant lose.

    Cheers,

    normclarke.

There are other alternatives to Mobil 1 which are equally good if not superior. I'd look at Opie Oils website and possibly contact the guys there... they know alot about engine and gearbox oil I'll vouch for that.

I am running Millers XFD fully synthetic engine oil and TRX gearbox oil in my old Polo and I can say they made my engine a fair bit smoother

    Hi there,

Mobil 1 ESP is what Audi recommend and sell in their dealers for their cars.

    Can't really complain at that!!

I've been looking at a few different oils, just to see how they do on a head to head! Castrol EDGE v Mobil ESP...

Thake a look at the charts below! 1st one is Mobil and the second is Castrol...

    Specifications and Approvals
Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5W-30 meets or exceeds the following industry specifications:
    ACEAC2/C3, A3/B3/B4ACEA (Meets Engine Test Requirements)A5/B5API (Meets Engine Test Requirements)SL / SMAPI CFSAE 5W-30

Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5W-30 has the following builder approvals:
    BMWLonglife 04Mercedes BenzMB-Approval 229.31/229.51Volkswagen (Gasoline / Diesel)504.00 / 507.00Peugeot Citroen AutomobilesE06-N3 / D06-N3

Also recommended for use in applications requiring
    Volkswagen (Gasoline) 502 00 / 503 00 / 503 01 Volkswagen^ (Diesel)505 01/ 505 00 / 506 00 / 506 01 ^All VW engines with the exception of Unit-Injector / Pump-Duse TDI without Longlife Service and without DPF between 1999-2003 and R5/V10-TDi before model year 2006

    Typical Properties

    Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5W-30
    SAE Grade5W-30Viscosity, ASTM D 445 cSt @ 40ºC 72.8cSt @ 100ºC 12.1Viscosity Index, ASTM D 2270 164Sulphated Ash, wt%, ASTM D 874 0.6HTHS Viscosity, mPa·s @ 150ºC, ASTM D46833.58Pour Point, ºC, ASTM D 97 -45Flash Point, ºC, ASTM D 92 254Density @ 15ºC, kg/l, ASTM D 4052 0.850

    Castrol...

    TestMethod(s)UnitTypicalRelative Density 15
    °CASTM D40520.8501AppearanceVisualclear and brightViscosity 100°CASTM D445mm²/s11.9Viscosity 40°CASTM D445mm²/s73.4Viscosity IndexASTM D2270None160CCS -30°CASTM D5293cP6130Ash, SulphatedASTM D874% wt0.600Total Base Number, TBNASTM D2896mg KOH/g6.0Flash Point, PMCCASTM D93°C209

You can see that the Mobil has a higher Viscosity index than the Castrol! And it kills the Castrol on the Flash point! I love to know what the Total base number is for the Mobil! Higher the better for diesels! When you look at millers oil the TBN is allot higher on some of there oils than both of these! But for some reason Millers don't say that anymore on there web site! For XFD it use to be in the region of 11...

But if the price of Mobil is cheap I'd go for that one! But when Costco are doing 3Ltr of Castrol EDGE for £11 you can't really compete with that kinda saving...

If you're dead set on Mobil, you go for it

However there are some superior oils out there (see Opie Oils website amongst others) and I was just trying to highlight that fact Good Luck!

    Hi,
Having looked in detail at the estimable website of the Opie group I can't find a better synthetic oil than Mobil 1. I can see a lot of competitors who I'm sure make a superb oil, but better? If you search the records you will find many claims of superiority but usually the detail is in minor areas which when judged against the total package become almost irrelevant. Used in a road car most reputable synthetics perform most effectively to give a higher mileage between changes and conform to the requirements of the manufacturer. I doubt that anybody could discern the differences when put to the test of a group of identical cars using a range of the top oils. The real test is under lab conditions and the published results of these tests are not easy to find. Mobil have been marketing Mobil 1 since 1975 with much acclaim and are only bettered by Amsoil on that front. Whose oil is better and by what measure?

    Cheers

    normclarke.

Going on the Amsoil web site they've done a "head to Head" against Mobil 1 and the results are way in favor of Amsoil! The TBN, Flash point and Fire point are all better than Mobil 1... The reason why I went for Castrol edge over the others was purely cost! When you can buy EDGE for £11 for 3 Ltr is makes economical sence to do so!

Castrol have a "unique FSI valve protection" so it claims on the bottle! And having a 3.2 FSI, I wanted the best protection for the new engine...
Weather it is just hype I don't know.

Well they were never going to say their oil is worse were they??

I don't think that any one oil is better than an other for road use, as long as they meet the VAG specs then you can't go wrong, and price is probably the best to go by!

Any manufacturers API group V oil is of a higher quality. Having said that, this is probably not what you want to hear is it? You having took the "I love Mobil 1" pill 'n all Here's a question for you...Is Mobil 1 based on a hydrocracked mineral oil base?

Maybe you missed this product when you searched the Opie Oils site?

I'd suggest you look more objectively at the range of oils out there...and then reconsider your first comment.
