Hi ppl, I've finally decided I need some help after reading all the archives and tryin to sort the problem myself without mithering anyone...so here goes. About 3 weeks ago takin a left hander on pretty much full throttle I experienced a sudden loss of power. Initially I thought it was just the ASR kicking in, but the car came out of the corner like a slug. The coil light(engine management) started flashing constantly accompanied with an "engine workshop" message and has continued to since. The turbo does not kick in at all anymore. After a few searches I changed the MAF for a OE Bosch unit and changed the glowplugs to no avail. A local garage hooked up their diagnostic (dont know if it was a VAGcom) and told me I needed 2 new injectors on cyls 3 and 4 and a new camshaft sensor and quoted me £500. So I decided to get a second opinion, another local garage disagreed and changed the brake pedal sensor which is mentioned here in a few threads, but again no change whatsoever.

So I booked the car in with a Volkswagen/Audi specialist who ran a full diagnostic check and checked all connections etc.

What they did and found is as follows..

control module diagnosis VW diesel 15P error memory

423B stop lamp switch - signal improbable
45B9 exhaust gas recirculation valve - open circuit/earth short
    46A0 Radiator fan 1 - open circuit/earth short
4C69 solenoid valve, intake manifold control flap - open circuit/earth short
    460C - relay fuel pump - open circuit/earth short

"Read diagnostic fault memory, various faults logged - cleared fault memory and interrogated Live Data from engine management components. Boost pressure doesnt change when the engine is revved, air mass readings are half the specified values at full throttle. Carried out vacuum tests on VariVane turbo mechanical actuator. Vari vane mechanically sound, using vacuum to operate boost control and observing live data, noted air mass readings were correct and boost pressure correct at full throttle. Fault lies within the boost control system vacuum circuit. Requires further testing."

The ECU was removed, the fittings cleaned and refitted, the fault memory would still not clear, even with the engine not running. They checked the wiring diagrams for a common earth point, connector plug etc for the failed component, no common link other than the ECU.

So it basically ended with no improvement to the car and a recommendation to visit the dealership with a view to a new ECU at about £1000!! I tried finding a thread on a similar case but cant seem to find any other passat suffering this same fate. If anybody at all can shed some light on this scenario, or can recommend a VAG specialist in the Manchester area who might have an alternative solution, I would be eternally grateful!!

The cam position sensor, brake light switch (engine side), EGR solenoid and manifold flap are all powered from fuse 102 in the ECU box in the plenum chamber. Having said that, these are almost the exactly the same fault codes as I was getting on a Golf 4 100PD TDI owned by forum member Babs and that turned out to be a faulty ECU. If you were able to get VAG fault code numbers for those codes, it would be easier to compare. What is your engine code, AJM?

I don’t recognise the codes given; it would be useful if you could get them converted from whatever they are to “VAG” or “P” codes. I think they are from a Launch code reader. These were the codes I constantly kept getting on the Golf 4, they would not clear

17932 - Fuel Pump Relay (J17): Open or Short to Ground P1524 - 35-10, Intermittent
18027 - Glow Plug Relay (J52): Open or Short to Ground P1619 - 35-10, Intermittent
17957 - Boost Pressure Regulation Valve (N75): Open or Short to Ground P1549 - 35-10, Intermittent

17849 - EGR Valve (N18): Open Circuit or Short to Ground P1441 - 35-10, Intermittent
19561 - Valve for Intake Manifold Flap (N239): Open or Short to Ground P3105 - 35-10, Intermittent

Even though your car is slightly different, the similarities are there and the symptoms match.

I'll have to find someone with a VAGcom to get the fault codes in VAG language...I cant find Babs as a member on here, did he change his ECU in the end, and did it solve the problem?

Babs is a she. I changed the ECU for her, well to be more accurate I found a used ECU from a friend of mine who runs a VW/Audi breakers and I tried to code it in but it would not play ball so I had Nottingham VW do it for me. It cured the problem as far as I know; I have not heard any bad news.

well, closure at last, just to fill anyone who cares in, Smith Knight Fay in Stockport took 3 days to find a loose fuel pipe which had worn through a few wires, causing them to short and affect the solenoid, which is why the turbo would not kick in. This is despite The General Motor Co. (VW/Audi "specialist" in Hazel Grove, Stockport) doing a full diagnostics and supposedly checking all the wiring in the engine bay. So after spending £250 on MAFs, glowplugs and other crap..the dealership did it all for £325. So the car is back to normal, but in the meantime I've defected to BMW and bought myself an M3 convertible and have been lappin up the sun!!
