    I have a problem with my 95 8v gti, where it will not idle properly and will cut out on the first junction i come to. It will restart immediately and not die again on that jurney, though it will hunt for revs.

    But then sometime it gets worst, when i try to start the car i have to keep my foot on the accelarator to keep the revs up or it will die. Making it impossible to drive as i'm no good at left foot breaking ! This has resulted in me having to use a clothes peg under the bonnet on the throttle body to keep it open slightly to get me home. This problem then seems to clear for a couple of weeks before returning, though the first problem is constant.

    Help would be very much appriciated.

    Do a search on here for throttle body cleaning / alignment.

    Probably caused by a combination and / or either;

    1, Dirty throttle body

    and / or

    2, Throttle body needs to be electronically aligned.

    and / or

    3, The throttle body is faulty, note that replacement will need to have the electronic alignment carried out on it.

    As above, do a search for lots more info.

    I agree, remove, clean and reset (using VAG-COM or similar) the throttle body and also have the fault memory read for codes and any found read, printed and cleared.

    well i've sorted that problem with no need for vag.com or removing the throttle body.
    What done it for me was simply removing the pipe from the airbox to the throttle body and holdind the butterfly valve open and simple cleaning it all down with a rag.
    The car has now run for over a month without a glitch.

    Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
