Cambelt Noise???

Hi all,

I have a strange noise coming from my engine. Sounds kinda like a whirring noise which seems to be coming from the cambelt cover. Gets faster as the engine revs.
I had the cambelt replaced on my Golf about 2 months ago by VW, the noise just appeared yesterday.
The cover seems to be fastened on correctly, so dunno what could be fouling it?
I was wondering if anyone else has had similiar problems?

My main concern is that the timing belt could have shredded slightly but without snapping completly - is this possible?

Anything is possible, I recommend you get it checked out asap as a break is usually fatal.

Hi

Had my camblet checked by VW today...£42.89 later they said the noise was coming from my alternator...as its a 'non-standard VW alternator' which has been fitted.

They quoted £170 + £95 labour to replace...great huh !

Anyone know the average life of a factory alternator? Cos' I'm really suprised the previous owner has had to change it at such low mileage. (63k now...60 when I bought it)

sounds to me like the auxilary drive belt needs changing.

Hmm..never thought of that...had another look today..really does sound like the noise is coming from cambelt case, & not alternator..but we'll see.
Its booked into VW for the alternator to be changed this friday...warranty company will cover it, so nothing lost if it aint' that I suppose.

If the noise is still there then it'll be upto VW to sort for misdiagnosis I reckon...

Will let you know the outcome.

Oh btw, anyone know if the auxillary belt will be replaced as standard, with an alternator change?

Just an update...had the alternator replaced today and the noise has gone !

Bad news...warranty company decided they wouldn't pay as they considered the fault 'wear & tear' . So I'm down £276 !! Nevermind eh...

Ive had the same proplem after having my cambelt replaced, the auxillary belt developed a screeching noise after re-fitting, almost like a slack fanfelt noise. the garage are fixing it today for free as the noise was not there before!
