I have noticed on my 2001 Passat (with Gamma stereo/CD changer) that the volume seems to have a mind of its own. It seems whenever I slow down at a junction or traffic lights that the volume seems to go down? Is this some kind of setting on the system as I couldn't find anything in the manual?

    Thanks.

It is a design feature, so not a problem. You can adjust this from the radio, you need to look for "GALA" settings. I think if you set this to zero then the volume will not increase. I have always found this useful as it drowns out the wife moaning about me driving too fast.
    Hope this helps

To adjust your GALA setting hold down the TP button for a few seconds, you should hear a bleep and a menu will appear on the screen, scroll through it until you find GALA a number between 0 and 5 will also be displayed. - 0 = volume will not adjust automaticaly with speed.
5 = volume will adjust with speed, and drive you mad!!. I find setting at 1 or 2 works well.

    Hope this helps.

I know it's many years too late having read the post , but i have just rectified the said same quietening volume issue today on a Gamma radio/cd/tape head unit. Initially i thought i was the Gala setting, but playing with this setting made no difference and the sound would be almost permanently quiet. What i figured the unit can and will do is protect the output stage amplifier circuitry by lowering the gain. I.e. if it detects a speaker wire shorted to neg (0V ground) or i would guess (but more unlikely to happen), the positive (+12v) of the vehicle on any of the four speaker outputs.
After testing the speaker cable loom at the radios connector with a digital multimeter on the Ohms/'beep' setting, i found a short to ground on one of the rear right speaker cables. Much searching while and assistant held the test lead in place showed the short to ground to be just in front of the cars heater unit. A bit of pushing/moving of the main wiring loom near the heater caused the 'beeping' or short circuit to go away and it hasn't come back since. The unit now works fine and at full volume.
Of course the short could have been anywhere from the radio to the speaker, but for me it was around the heater area.
