If you have a look in your manual at the Technical Data section, then hunt out the 125KW 1.4 engine it will tel you there what VW specification you will need.

It will be something along the lines of 506.00, 507.00 etc.

    Hope that helps

    Hi,

VW state their oils by their own standards as opposed to the 0W10 type as some oils are the corerct grade but not up to their standards.
If you have a look on the back of the cartons you'll see the specifcations panle in small writing down the bottom somewhere. Be prepared to pay quite a bit though, oil for the PD engines ain't cheap!!!

    Cheers for that.
So I take it I need to buy it from a VW dealership and not esso or homebase.

No you can still get it from Halfords etc, you just need to check that what you get meets the VW specs.

I think you will find 'Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5W-30' is the perfect oil for your Golf - this oil is ideal for most VW's produced in the past 3+ years - I work for an oil company and can recommend this and also drive a VW GT Sport 170, which uses this oil also. Hope this helps

yours is a gt sport which is diesel.

uk1234's is a tsi thus petrol.

    totally different oil required.

I too worked for an oil distributor and did a hell of a lot of research before purchasing.

Good savings though eh? i was paying £100 for 18 x 1ltr of elf evoloution specific for my engine.

I would go for a Castrol Edge 5w30 fully synthetic oil as it has the 507 Vw approval and its suitable for longlife service intervals, also its good for PD Tdi engines as well. Castrol Edge 0w40, 0w30 is also good and reccomended for petrol engines.

A totally different oil is not required for a TSi Petrol Engine - Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5W-30 has the following VW Builder Approvals; 504 00 (Petrol) & 507 00 (Diesel). The only common bespoke engine within the VW group is the PD Engine which does require a different oil but then it is diesel, so not applicable here.
