    Hi Folks!
    Golf Mk2 1988 1.3 5dr
I've noticed that the temperature gauge is not working on the dash, along with an intermittant fault on the radiator fan. Could these two be linked?
Any suggestions as to how to fix either or both will be greatly appreciated.

The fan takes it's signal from a switch on the rad and the gauge in the car takes its reading from a separate sender.

Have you tested the gauge? you can do this by taking the wire connected to sender and disconnecting it and shorting it to ground. if the gauge goes to the hot position then its the sender, if not its the wiring or gauge itself.

I would suggest getting a haynes manual as this will be a great help. I only have experence of the 8v GTI engine and its situated on the union that comes from the block and goes to the radiator via a hose.

    Yes I did.
It was the temperature sender unit/switch.
I have a 1988 1.3 and there are two sender units that are connected to the thermostat housing. I changed both, at a cost of £15, and now the temp gauge works.
    Good luck with yours.
