Quick note as this may help others.
    Symptoms
My 1.9TDI bad been suffering from a lot of noise that appeared at around 1400rpm and died away after 2200 which meant it was noisy at most round town revs and sounded like a blowing exhaust from the outside, from inside sounded like a cross between a leaky exhaust or the exhaust just catching bodywork.

    Identification of the problem.
Had the car on jacks trying to locate the problem which has been more than annoying and it definitely seemed like it was behind the sump guard.
Popped the bonnet to locate the problem from above - lent over engine whilst my son revved the engine.- Problem had disappeared - Strange me thinks, stood up and problem came right back.

    Resolution
Located the problem as being the last moulded section that takes the air across the front Nearside of the engine bay and down into the air filter unit (I think) The problem section is triangular at one end and goes into a rectangular section which clips into place. the clips have either worn or the gasket / joint has hardened and this was vibrating making a disproportionate noise. Undid the two screws on the moulding above it, lifted that off and then pushed the moulding firmly into place and using a fine drill, drilled a pilot hole and used a small 3mm self tapper to lock the two together.

Problem solved, car back to normal..... Oh bliss.........

    Hope this helps someone.

This seems to be a well known problem. I fixed mine by holding it down tight and duct taping it to the section below..

    Cheers guys.

I fiddled around with the cover next to that duct when I replaced my main engine cover rubbers the other week.
Collectively we will rid our cars of the noise.
I think my exhaust may need some attention as I can feel vibration at low revs too, probably the exhaust underneath me.
    (Bloody diesels!)
Never had all this grief with my A4 1.8T and the airbox / pipework is all basically the same!
