I've reached the stage of life at which not only do I actually need an estate for everyday carting the family around but also need even more room to take them on holiday.

Any advice about the best roof boxes and rails to get for an 07 Passat Estate 2.0 TDI 140?? And any tips on where to get them?

Also is there much impact on mpg?

Impact on MPG can be as much at 5-10 dependant on your load and, ultimately, the shape of the roofbox. I'd look online for them.

As for the roof rails - try these out - http://www.handirackuk.com/

I have some Thule bars for my car, there weren't the cheapest, but I did get them three cars (or 7 years) ago. All I have had to do inbetween is change the feet, as the car has changed - sold the old feet on Ebay each time. I have certainly been happy with them.

As for Roof Box, I got a Thule Ocean 200 3 years ago when I had a A4 saloon, and it hasn't been on the Passat Estate - no need, so if you fancy a box that's been on twice, (once to Denmark and once to Austria!) let me know ;-)

I got the Roof Bars locally, but the Box from teh Web - will check address later, they matched the lock to my keys at no cost.

I have matched locks for the bars, box and bike carriers which is nice.

Just bought a Kamei roofbox for our Passat Estate from roofboxes.co.uk.
The fact they use the VW wind tunnel to test them swung it for me! It also won the autoexpress test this year.

Got some Atera bars to fit it onto the roof rails. The roof box is really easy to fit on but the bars took some setting up. Once set up though they go on and off really easy.
If you want genuine bars try VAGparts they quoted me a lot less than the main dealer prices but still no where near as cheap as the Atera bars.

I had a Skoda Octavia Estate before the Passat Estate, and bought the official Skoda roof bars. They are actually Thule bars, with a Skoda badge stuck on. They fit the Passat perfectly, are lockable, and are rock solid - you pay for what you get basically

I use Thule bars and feet, good quality kit. I already had the black bars from my '98 saloon and just bought new 755 (I think) feet off Ebay for an incredible £20. The feet are great as they use rubber straps to clamp and lock to the factory roof rails and black bars look OK as the factory rails are the same colour. If you choose aero (tubular silver) bars be careful as some roof boxes won't fit on these bars.
As for a roof box I have a Mont Blanc. Some of the cheaper ones really are bad and some companies won't ship them as they break in transit.
Surf the net for the best deals and if you see a Buy it Now with best offer on ebay don't be afraid to put in a cheeky offer.
