New 2.0 TDI owner here with stupid question.
Is the roof aerial safe to go through an automatic car wash or does it fold down somehow ? I can see no advice in the handbook.

You can just unscrew it. Personally I never take a car into a carwash, its a bit harsh on the paintwork.

I cant see any reason to use these car washes ALL they do is scratch the hell out of your paintwork and before long you have millions of tiny scratches which willl only get worse

Just had a (gentle) go and it wouldn't budge. Do you unscrew it right at the bottom where it meets the roof or where the twirly bit of metal thickens out a bit ?

Full marks to all of you for hand washing BTW but I'm too lazy to do that.

Yes, where the twirly bit thickens out a bit. May need some WD40 to help release it.

No doubt it is a Company Car then?

No it's mine, but I'm not that bothered about it looking shiny shiny, just need to get the bird crud off.

take it to the local hand wash place. pay £5 and it'll be better than a car wash.

Yup, never use an automatic car wash thingy.

Always hand wash with loving care, better still wash it yourself as the golf isn't a large car and only takes about 10 mins.
