Hi as I have expalined in a previous thread i'm looking at changing my Superb1.8T for a 130 TDi Passat, I have seen a 04 130 TDi Sport that has taken my fancy with only 34K on it but when I put the reg in Insurance quote websites they come back as it being a 4motion 130 Sport TDi, what does the 4motion mean, A little bit of investigation on Parkers and Auto Trader sudgest it is less economical at only 43mpg but it Tows a full 200kg more than a standard 130 TDi what is it that different about this car for those quoted figures

Also they also quote the boot sapce at 400litres where as my Superb is quoted at 462litres how is this possible when they are essentially the same car except the Superb having an extra 100mm rear legroom space?

    Cheers

    4motion is 4 wheel drive.

the lower mpg i presume is due to the extra weight of the 4 wheel drive system.

    hope that helps!

As mentioned it is 4 wheel drive, though not full time. I have a 2003 TDi SE 4motion.

does that mean you can switch between 2 and 4 wheel drive or is it a automatic thing. (something else to go wrong)

It's automatic changing between 2 and 4 wheel drive. I believe when the front wheels slip by 1/7th of a turn it starts sending the power to the rear wheels.

Torsen differential as fitted on a4/a6/a8/passat 4motion is permanent 4 wheel drive which splits power 50-50 between axles ! The new s4, RS4 and RS6 have a 60-40 power split between axles to improve handling. The Haldex differential/clutch as fitted to a3/s3/golf is front wheel drive most of the time and when the front wheels slip, the power go to the rear wheels as well ! Not funny in a wet roundabout ! There is more room in the boot of the superb because rear floorpan is different on a front wheel drive.

It's the Audi Quattro system and not the VW Haldex system as fitted to Golf's etc, permanent 4 wheel drive on the B5.5 Passat's.The boot is a lot shallower than normal models due to having a rear drive axle.
MPG isn't a lot different(maybe 2-3mpg)They are a bit more expensive to run than a normal Passat as well cos they go through tyres a lot quicker all round but,the driving experience is way superior to any other Passat.

If you do buy one get the suspension sorted out and a bit of "mild" tuning and the Passat 4 motion is a really cracking car.

Thanks for clarifying that, i was told it was a part time 4wd but the person i asked must have thought it had the Haldex type system.
