I had my previous BMW's remapped by Simon of E-Maps (The king in re-mapping) truely awsome

I asked Simon about re-mapping my soon to arrive 170 SEL Manual with DPF. Simon said it would not be of much benefit due to the DPF being too restrictive and not allowing the full benefit of 200+bhp. Simons own Seat 140 (Non DPF)he has re-mapped to 185.

Look up emaps in google and send him an email, really nice guy and highly recommended in BMW circles.

Disclaimer, there are other re-mappers but this one I know is highly thought of, however changing engine specs can be dangerous so think first..

    Then get it done

Not much good if the DPF strangles the output though, if you don't have a DPF your laughing!!

"remap that increases power to 210bhp and 320 lb torque "

Can I hacksaw off my DPF - as I really fancy 210 bhp!? Can the computer be fooled anyway????

And finally how much would it cost to do??

Quite fancy a bit more poke.

I don't know if it possible to hack off the DPF! I would doubt it though, and as this is part of your emissions system would probably be part of the MOT and hacking it off may mean you fail What the ECU would make of it I don't have a clue.

As a point of note when I first looked at a Passat I did some very basic calculations between my BMW 530d and the Passat 170 manual, the Passat is 16% lighter, has 12% less output, 15% less torque but does about 12~15% more mpg , these figures based on printed figures. Overall I reckon that the Passat is about as quick if not quicker than my previous 6cyl 3L diesel BMW. I am no statistical engineer so this is a rule of thumb job.

(Mind you to get 30mpg on the BM I drove like a geriatric pensioner, normally I only get around 20mpg)

I found Simon's emailed reply and I hope he wont mind me copying it here:

"The new 2.0tdi 170 have a DPF and are a total nightmare to remap as the DPF is very small. The fuel consumption remapped or stock is worse than the 2.0tdi 140bhp. I have the 2.0tdi 140bhp in my Seat with the DSG gearbox remapped to 185bhp. I have done some 60k in 18months and "drive it like I have stole it". Long term mpg is 45mpg, on a steady run to Exeter today I got 52mpg, average speed for the journey was 65mph. The 170bhp with DPF will get no where near this due to the DPF."

Email: info@e-maps.co.uk if you want to make further enquires.

RE. economy of the 170 tdi
my sport estate averages 46mpg without trying too hard . a long 100 mile run at 60- 65 mph in 6th returns mid 50s.
however when i put away my zimmerframe and drop the shoe that big heavy car sure does fly . the one thing i would change is that its a bit flat below about 2000rpm almost "petrol like" so a remap might give the car some lower down grunt

These will go up to 210 max and another 70 nm torque. we can also tune these to give about 3mpg more but gain are less/ Will defo help with the flat spot.

Check out the ST3 group thread, might be of interest as you can switch between 2 maos and also put back to the original nmaop too, Details in my signature.

    Thanks, Mark
