Hi In answer to your question. The T4 and the T5 are basically two entirely different vehicles. The T5 with a more modern design, not that there was anything wrong with the design of the T4.Working with these vehicles on a daily basis, i dont like saying it ,but there has been a lot of problems with the T5,problems that we could be doing without.Iam not saying there has been no problems with the T4 but nothing in comparison to the T5, and to sum it up i would personally say the T4 was a more reliable vehicle, but iam sure there are those that will disagree

In my opinion they are both great vans. I had a 2.5TDi (102hp) T4 for 3 and a half years and it only let me down once when the fuel pump belt snapped. It was reliable and economical (40 mpg if driven steadily), very quick, and I only lost £1600 in the whole time I had it. I now have a T5 Sportline which is truly amazing. As soon as I saw the brochure, I had to have one. The only thing that lets it down is the fuel consumption. But you can't have all that power AND 40 mpg. Actually you can't have all that power and 30mpg , to be honest.

Spot on, i would go for a late T4. A T5,if its out of warranty could give you some big bills.

My advice would be to go to your loacal VW van centre, and get a test drive in both, the T5 is a totally different animal to the T4, i have a 2005 1.9tdi 104bhp window van i bought it 2 years old and it has had no problems drives a treat be sure to get arm rests though i didn't, I'm not saying there is anything wrong with the T4 my mates have had a few over the years and been very reliable busses but we have moved on to the t5, my mate has just bought a t5 2.5tdi 174 bhp and that is totally different to the 1.9 it pulls 130mph and syill carries a tonne amazing, we hae had them both remapped 104bhp to 137bhp and the 174bhp to 212bhp, this has made both vans a pleasure to drive bringing torque levels up and als fuel consumption is better, i know you shouldn't need to do this but believe me it is worth it, check out the Brickyard forum
    Hope this helps
    Cheers Paul
