Since I bought the car the rear wiper and the wash function has not worked.

I'm wondering whether this is likely to be because the motor has failed or because of the switch on the indicator stalk?

Does anyone know whether the rear wiper motor controls the water jet aswel as the wiper movement? If so, it could be the motor. If the jets are controlled elsewhere, it won't be as the front jets are working fine.

If it is the indicator stalk, is there a repair that can be done without having to take the steering wheel off as I have an airbag so I'm thinking that would be a nightmare job?

    Any help much appreciated!

I assume there is screen wash in the bottle. I also assume you are aware that to activate the rear screen wash, you push the wiper arm on the steering column away from you.

If the wash motor is in fact ok and working, and wash comes onto the rear screen, but the wiper blade does not work, i.e. the wash just dribbles down the screen without being spread by the wiper, this will be because the spring in the wiper arm has lost its lubricant and so is not doing its job, i.e. ensuring that it keeps the wiper blade tight on the glass. To fix this, lift wiper arm up, apply WD40, very sparingly, to the spring and then pull the arm back and forward a few times to work the WD40 into the spring. Release the arm into its normal position resting on the glass and activate the wiper arm on the steering column. You may have to do this several times. If this not work at all, you need a new wiper blade as it must be too far worn. Note that too much WD40 on the spring and it dribbles down into your paintwork, where it can leave a mark that is very difficult to remove, so wipe the spring with a cloth when you are done to soak up the excess.

Have you checked all the fuses relays?
The wiring from the car into the bootlid cracks over time and you have to splice in new wire to repair this fault.
Check for voltage at the motor and if there isn't any then you need to look in the top left with the boot open as that is where the wiring goes intot he car body.
It could be the switch so check for voltage at the pump to make sure.

I have a similar problem with a rear wiper on a A4 sport.
Gave the car an engine service today with a mechanic friend (or rather I watched). We uncovered the motor and it appeared that the plastic insert that takes water through the centre of the unit to the jet had split allowing water into the gears.(probably when it froze in the winter.) This in turn has corroded the moving parts causing it to Seize .My partner in crime recons that this is a common fault.

Hi just had a problem with my rear washer. Could hear washer pump working but no water to rear screen. Found pipe joiner had came adrift. This joiner is located in passenger foot well behind panel on left side ,held on by two screws. Re-fitted pipe but still no water to rear. Found jet blocked, pulled out jet cleaned with sewing needle and re-fitted. Now works fine.
