Im going to do an oil service on my 97 A4 1.8 20v, and the handbook is quite ambiguous as to what oil I should be using.

What grade is the "normal" to stick in? I dont want to put anything in that could cause oil starvation probs due to it cream cheesing.

    Cheers

The 1.8 20v ADR engine runs on 10/40,

would use a semi synthetic, and change every 5k

Don't buy bottom brand oil like comma.

ones like millers, fuch, etc. are fine

Hi, i would use a fully syn oil in 0w30/ 5w40/ 5w30 and change every 7.5k/ 10k or once a year. You will avoid sludge forming inside the engine and your turbocharger will last way longer. Semy syn. oil like 10w30, 10w40 also is recomended but needs changing sooner + you will need to let the turbocharger cool down few min. every time you boot the car to avoid oil backing inside the turbocharger/oil line . Usually you get what you pay for with te oils, the more expensive it is, the better, also use genuine filters. Castrol EDGE is a very good oil, i use it myself in all the car i service.

hi. how about mobil1 super s 10w40 semi syn ? is it ok for my car? someone told me that old engines need semi syn oil rather than full syn... true?
is it true that there's 2 types of oil? one for the winter season and one for the summer? i guess it's not the exact season that matters but the outside temp.
    cheers.

Mmmmm, the good old oil debate, i certainly am no expert in oils but i did race motorcycles a few years ago and always used fully synthetic and changed very 2 meetings (at £40 a time), Then more complex and modern high performance engines (R1, GSXR 1000 etc) started to get clutch slip on fully synthetic, so used a very good quality semi synthetic. In my 1.8T i use the semi synthetic silver synta vw audi oil, and change every 5K, i would have used fully synthetic but i bought the car on 117K (now done 170K) and was unsure what it had been run on previously, as far as i am aware, unless its been run on fully synthetic for most of its life its not worth changing (Never run an engine in using fully synthetic, its too good and glazes the bores leading to high oil consumption) in my case using good oil and changing regularly is better than using fully synthetic and changing every 10K. This is just my opinion and i look foward to other peoples views.

you don't need this these days.

the numbers 10w/30 etc actually refer to the viscosity in different seasons, the W standing for winter.

it used to be that you needed a more 'runny' oil in winter to combat the temperature dropping and thickening the oil, and vice versa in summer.

modern oils overcome this problem, and a 10w/30 will replace a 10 rated winter oil and a 30 rated summer oil all in one fluid.

at least this is how i understand it, feel free to correct me if i am wrong...
