Just picked up some oil today for an oil change, castrol gtx 'high mileage' 15w-40, it is suitable for both petrol and diesel engines and meets the VW 505 00 requirement for my passat. Its a mineral based oil, and I'm pretty sure the stuff I've been using before is synthetic or atleast part synthetic. Will this oil be ok? I suppose it has be if deemed suitable for VW. Mine is on 178,000 and so I've opted for a slighty thicker oil and this stuff is specifically designed for higher mileage issues and contains 'seal conditioners' and protects against smoke and leaks.

i heard any mineral oil in a pd engine bakes onto the cam shaft and basically cracks the top end ?? discuss !!

178,000 miles wow !! does the car still perform as good once hot.

I`m pretty sure mineral oil is fine, it just breaks down quickly.

Frequent changes say 5 to 6 k miles and all is well.

My old Imprezza Turbo used 10w 40 mineral oil...(as was specified by subaru)
The only downside to that was a service interval of 6k miles or 12months.
The car had its oil changed twice a year from new.... never got caked in sludge either!

    My 2p`s worth.

Mine isn't a PD engine, its a 1997 TDI 110. And yes, it still performs brilliantly, plenty of power, torque, starts on the button, every time in all weather, and its condition doesn't reflect the mileage at all! Probably due to the car having a full service history!

Mines a 98 TDi sport with 216,000 miles on the clock .
I use 15W/40 mineral oil changed every 5,000 miles.
it don't use any oil or water and starts on the button every time even in the coldest of winters.

Just checked on my auto data and they state.
    15W/40 or 10w/40
    but auto data note states.
    0W/30 long life.
phoned VW and they weren't sure (never phoned back)
NB. mine is the AFN engine code.

The AFN can use 15w-40, 10w-40 or 5w-30. It needs to conform to VAG standards 505 00 or 505 01 for normal intervals (typically 15w/40 and 10w/40) and 507 00 or 506 01 (typically 5w-30). 0w-30 is VAG spec 503 00, 506 00 and 506 01 so not suitable for an AFN, it is really only intended for a PD TDI with a diesel particulate filter,
