Exhaust rumbling,rattling

Hello
I experince a rumbble from the exhaust at around 1100 rpm and then it goes away once the speed build up. I can also create the rumble at idle by holding the idle speed at 1000 rpm but if i grab the end of the exhaust pipe it goes away.
I thought maybe its the mounts so I purchased from VW dealers all the mounts and changed them which has made a bix difference but i'm still get a slight rummble/rattle sound from the backend of the exhaust.

Can anyone suggest a solution?

It could be the baffles in the boxes loose or your Cat. The first will mean a new exhaust or box, the second a new Cat which may be expensive.

Have exactly the same problem taken it to 3 independant garages, all the mounts/brackets ok. the census of opion from 2 of the garages that the middle box insides are loose, broken, brakingup,only way to cure it is new exhaust.As a matter of interest has your car done short journeys only or has it done lots of motorway miles. I have a theory

Hi, i have exactly the same on my 180,000 miler, some say it sounds like a dinosaur! but they arn't very old

By the way its all motorway miles up to about 150,000/160,000 now its a combination of long and short

I had the same problem on my Audi, the cat had a fracture in the outside casing. Not that expensive £110 for the part

Hi Guys
I have the same problem with my 97 Golf CL AUTO. Rumbling at idle and excessive emmisions. I do short journeys only. I have been told by two indepent dealers about the lambda sensor or baffles in exhaust.
Could anyone help.

Hi the car doesnt really do that much of short journeys, and the cars seen mostly motorway miles.I have had around 2 years now and its defo started with me. I chnaged the mounts thinking its because i have run the car in high gears and low revs (leave it in 6 gear and forget about it) but chnaging the mounts have made a difference but the noise still is there

Its not the cat as when i grab the tail pipe and push againts it , the noise goes away.
One garage told me it could be front down pipe, not sure really

Anyone have any ideas?

Hi all,

I think I'm getting a similar problem, I get a rumble when pulling away or at very low revs, but I'm also getting a strange eggy smell in the car just after I first start it, and continues until the car is properly warm.

I hadn't really considered that they may be related until reading this post! Has anyone else got they eggy smell with a split/damaged cat?

If it does turn out to need a new Cat, does anyone know roughly how much it might cost?

Cats are expensive. I had to have new cats in my Passat V6 in 2003, having 2 cats made it even more expensive, the bill was £800

YUP thats the same as mine hold the tail pipe, noise disappears.
my theory is that low revs vibrate the exhaust to pieces.
I bought mine year old with 42k on clock all motorway miles, was in pristine condition, but because I do a lot of short runs now 400 miles a week hardly reach 60 mph the exhaust system just cannot hack it.

Not going to replace my exhaust as I am due to change car soon.

never had any problems with the previous 110 se b5 exhaust system tho
