    Hi all,

Don't know an awful lot about cars except when there's something wrong with it! I've just driven home from the city and noticed that my MK4 Golf wasn't accelerating as it usually does, it sort of chugs a little when I accelerate after changing gear and doesn't seem to have as much power as usual. However when I rev it up to about 5,000 revs it seems fine. I have only owned the car for the last eight months, it's 01 and has 55k miles. I'm not sure if belts have been changed, does this sound like a belt problem or something else?

    Thanks in advance!

    Lucy

I can tell you it will not be a belt problem as the engine would be destroyed if the belt had failed. I'll guess its a Tdi as you mention the belt at close to 60,000 miles. Tdi's are prone for the airflow meter failing which results in a loss of power. Is the engine management light on?

It's a 1.4 petrol. I have had terrible problems with the engine management light over the last few months (had it in the main dealers numerous time where the garage thought they had fixed it) and I had the EGR valve changed, then another one put in as the one they replaced it with was faulty and then finally was diagnosed as dirt in the throttle body I think. Its not on at the moment although the oil light does keep coming on even though there is definitely oil in it. I hope they didn't take the bulb out of the engine warning light symbol!!!

I'm soooo sick of car problems!!! !!!

    Thanks for your help!

Hi, i have the exact same problem i have a 01 golf 1.4L petrol, i was told it was a problem with the lambda sensor and if its not this its the ignition coil seems to be a common problem from what i have heard. My engine light comes on and when it was hooked up to the computer it registered a fault with the lambda sensor, but when i changed this the chugging continued and i have now being yold thats its a coil problem.

So the engine management light does work because it lights up with the rest of the lights on the dash on ignition. I've been driving it again over the weekend and it is fine for the first few minutes of a journey and then starts to chug.
    It starts in 2nd gear...
