    Hi

My uncle and I have the same engine in different car, his got a Passat 2.5tdi and I have the A6 2.5 TDI.

To change the camblets water pump on his car will cost him £550 on my car I have been quoted upwards of £800.

Why such a difference? I could understand a few £ but nearly £300.

So, who could recommend a good independent garage who doesn't take the **** with its pricing around Uxbridge?

    Cheers

    Jack

I had a 2.5 tdi A6 AFB 1999 cam belts changed at Helston Garages VW dealer this week for £504 inc vat. Although the A6 and Passat can both have the AFB engine, there may be more bodywork of the A6 to remove but I don't know. I think that the hourly rate near Uxbridge may be more than in Cornwall.
    Regards, Michael

The difference is down to the badge.

Audi ******** charge £110 per hour!!!! The mechanic gets a very very small percentage of that.

VW must all be the same / similar prices then, i've just been quoted £350 for cambelt change and extra £200 if I want a new water pump fitted at the same time, not bad i thought. 2003 passat V6 TDI AKN. Prices from Pullman in Durham. must be down to labour rates.

Mine was about £700 at an independent I trust using all pukka Audi parts throughout.

But this price includes a new dual mass front pully, which was over £180 trade.

I'm pretty handy (engine & gearbox rebuilds before now) but it was about the limit of what I'd tackle solo. It looked like a major front end crash once everything was hanging off!

I'd have thought £400-500 would be a fair price at a good independent if using Audi parts. I know that the copy parts are cheaper, but this is one place I wouldn't recommend taking the risk if you want to keep the car for a few years.

Mine was about £550 I think (Audi A6), local specialist just south of Birmingham, that included a new water pump

I got told that the VW dealer charges 60 per hour the Audi dealer down the road charges £75 per hour. They are the same company that run the dealerships

Its ability to pay pricing at its best, go to an independent
