Just thought I would drop a post in about a cost of major service and timing belt change so people can use it as a benchmark/rough idea... especially when it comes to timing belt changes as that gets asked often here.

The garage I will be using is a local independant (non specialist) who I have used on several occasions. The owner/mechanic is trustworthy and competent.

Labour charge is £35/hr inc VAT

    Parts bought (from VAG Parts)...
    Oil sump plug/nut
    Oil Filter
    Air Filter
    Fuel Filter
    Green Temp Sender
    Coolant level sensor/Reservour
    Timing belt kit
    Total £130

    I anticipate the following costs
    Comma PD oil £30
    G12+ Coolant £10
    Waterpump £30

    Labour...
    Cambelt change £100
    Major Service £70

So all in all... for a major service with timing belt/waterpump change inc genuine VAG parts....£370

I'll be getting my MOT done at the same time so there'll be a multi-buy discount especially if I pay by cash

VW wanted £430 just for the Timing belt change alone. I know they have got a price match offer but I rather just stick to my local.

i've had my cam belt and waterpump changed and an MOT at the same time at a VW main dealer £383.33 all in.

they quoted me more so i said that i should of got my dad to bring it in as they keep cutting his bills in half for one reason or another.

    so they helped me out.

That's a really good price and very flexible of them.

Went to my VW dealer today to order a Waterpump. £31 plus £40 surcharge (which they refund when you return old waterpump.

I read somewhere on this forum (or possibly another forum) that the original waterpump had plastic propellers which were prone to failure/melting. Apparently VW now do this part with brass propellers.

Asked at the parts desk and the chap said they have plastic propellers. Thye may have been brass previously but VW now use plastic to save on production costs.

So what is the case on this then?
Does anyone have the VW part number for my vehicle that will have brass propellers?
Can I get a decent one from GSF/Eurocarparts?
Am I worrying about plastic propellers unneccessarily?

    Why stuff the dealer?

I find it easier to deal with someone who has a reputation at stake!

Also, main dealers aren't that much dearer than independents these days.

As an example, my local dealer (Heritage of Westbury) quoted me £295 all in to change the cambelt on a 130PD motor.

That's the advantage if you know what you're doing! My Audi dealer has just quoted me £220 for a full service on my A4, and £420 for a cambelt change

Plastic propellers will last for around 100k miles.. (mind did)

Anyway.. OEM parts are plastic, The non OEM you have the option, platic or brass..

The Surcharge is normal on the water pump too from Audi/VW
