    Hi

    Got a Passat yesterday on a 04 plate (estate - 5 speed manual gearbox).

    It's a 1.9 TDi 130 bhp (96 kw).

    The manual says to use High-lubricity multigrade oil, either;

    VW 506 01
    or
    VW 505 01

    dependant on "Vehicles with LongLife service" or Vehicles without LongLife" service.

    I have two questions;

    1) How do I determine what engine type I have - with or without longLife.

    2) I live a long way from a VW main dealer - what oil could I safely use if I brought it from a regular car parts shop (this is dependant on answer 1).

    I need to top up, so I don't want to drive until I know what oil I can use.

    Thanks for any help you can give.

    Gilly.

    If you go for a long life service schegule then use VW 507.00 spec oil these tend to be 5w30.

    I personally change my oil every 6,000 miles and use a VW505.00 5w40.

    Because your engine is a PD (Pump Duse) then you must use the correct oil to avoid engine damage.

    Hi, i also have a quick question about oil grades - i need to top up and looked at my manual for the correct grades i needed, My A4 1.9 TDi is on a 9000 mile service schedule, and the manual says i need oil which has BOTH VW 500 and VW505. However, when trying to get oil in garages etc, i can only find oil with either 500 or 505, not both.
    If i go for one of these oils, is there potentially any damage that can be caused, or will it be fine to just use either?
    Any help much appreciated.

    someone posted a very useful list of the various manufacturers 505.01 oils on here a few months back and that was copied from a 2003 post I think. I lost my copy and have been unsuccessful in searching for the original posts. Maybe someone still has a copy ?

    Hi there, my first post here and right away I need your help. I have a 2003. Passat 1.9 tdi pd 96kw, and at the moment I'm using total quartz 9000 5w40 full synthetic, for year and a half now. Engine is running smooth, oil changes every 6000 miles, and is barely losing any oil between change intervals. Since It came to my attention that it's not a 505.01 standard oil (which i'm definitely getting soon for my next scheduled service) I'm wondering could it damage the engine in any way?

    Thank you in advance, bb

    Ooops , I know of a main dealer doing exactly the same for years supplying a non PD oil , it resulted in cam wear thus an injector missfire .

    5W30 507.00 LongLife is a higher quality oil than 5W40 505.01 .

    Ugh..well, that sounds depressing. Thanks for your reply mate.

    Probably going castrol edge or anything premium with a 505.01 mark next, don't quite see the purpose of using longlife oils with my mileage and change intervals, with my PD oldie.

    It's the oils quality mate , 507.00 is superior to 505.01 in terms of wear etc .
