I'm hoping someone may have a little more knowledge about this than me?!? I've got a 2004 A4 1.8T (190) and need some help! Under heavy acceleration, alongside the usual turbo 'whistle' i'm getting a loud 'sucking air' noise from under the bonnet...the car has not lost any performance and seems to be driving fine. A few days ago I got the car back from a garage after having the water pump, thermostat and cam belt replaced after the water pump broke up. Has anyone got any ideas of what this could be or has anyone had a similar problem?

Something to do with the pressure release valve (dump valve) being knacked?
Just a possibility, there could be other options; check all your intake and vacuum hoses are properly connected.

Hi Iain, many thanks for your reply...i'll check the valve and the pipes and see what I can find...car sounds quite good with the whooshing noise...if I could gaurantee no problems would arise I could be tempted to leave it that way!

    Cheers, Dunks.

I have just cured a similar problem on my 1.9 TDi. I found a split in the "s" shaped hose which came from the turbo to the pipe that runs across the bottom of the car. I had the water pump go a couple of years back and the belt cut through the wiring for the air con. I think it also cut through the hose. I have noticed the noise recently getting worse and the performance dropping off. I've temporarily repaired it with gaffer tape and now it performs better than I can ever remember, maybe it's been leaking for years and it has only just got bad enough to notice. Good Luck

I also had a similar problem as described above, took me ages and many trips to and from the garage to get it sorted.
i was getting a 'whooshing' sound under the bonnet when accelerating and after a few days/week i started to get black smoke from the exhaust, which got worse as time went on. The garage replaced the Air Flow meter, but this did not help, eventually phoned an audi/vw specialist for advice and he diagnosed immediately. He told me to go back to the garage and say the the hose connecting the intercooler to the turbo had a hole in it and by replacing this, everything should go back to normal. Lo and behold, the hose was ordered, although it cost about €150... and when replaced, the car had more power, no smoke or whooshing sound...
My A4 is a 1.9 TDI 2001, but it sounds like it's a similar thing... Hope that helps and good luck...

    Hi there,

I had the same problem on my 1989 200 turbo. The hose connecting the intercooler to the turbo had a split and replacing it solved everything.

    Regards

    Terry
