Please help me before I pull all my hair out and go bald!!

I have a Golf 2.0L GTI....if i try to play certain cd-r cds it comes up, magazine, on the display....and looks like it's checking for the cd changer, then after 5 minutes i get fed up waiting for it to read it and change cds. I dont have a cd changer, although on the dash it has a button, to toggle between cd player and cd changer. Maybe its one of those built in ones into the dash....I have only had the motor for 4 months, so haven't quite worked it out, although its ******* me off...

In summary, original cd's work no problems, some cd-r work, but only maybe 10%. I have tried ensuring i only burn 20 tracks on to a disc, incase that helped, but any help would be much appreciated!!!

    Thanks in advance

Have you tried testing the copies on another cd player? Maybe there crappy cd's? Also what program you use to make cd's cos Nero is best.

Hi there Louise, we have the same model Golf, and are experiencing the same issues with the cd player. we also have no cd changer attached, and receive the same 'magazine' message. and yes, we are also close to pulling out all of our hair.

if you have found any solution to this problem, or if anyone else is familiar with it, please help us! this is starting to look like an expensive one to fix.

(apologies for the grammar, i've got flu)

addendum: we did attempt Halfords today in the hope of at least getting some advice. and though we got to look at some shiny things mounted securely to a wall and the opportunity to listen to some of the chaps on the shop floor chatting about girlfriends and 'following through', we didn't really receive any kind of customer service at all. so if you're in the Sunderland area, i think you could safely cross that one off the list of places to go for help. we actually got more help from someone who looked about half my age in a dapper tracksuit in one of the local chop-n-shop independent discount stores. though the best he could recommend was a whole new cd player and a fascia to make it look less like we'd glued it in.
    oh well, c'est la shopping.

    thanks for your time.

I had an idea today....ive only had the car for a few months, though I am thinking, maybe the previous owner had a changer fitted. They might have disconnected it, taken it, but left a cable connected to the back of my stereo. and, maybe thats why its searching the magazine cartridge....don't know, I'll have to check that but might be a possible answer...

It could also be related to the speed you burn your discs at - a lot of people burn at full speed i.e. x48 but when burning at these speeds you're more prone to digital errors on the disc, so slow it down to say x12 speed and you'll probably find the disc will be readable in your player. Nero is one of the best programs to use and an OEM copy (Version 7 isn't compatable with Windows Vista) can be picked up for about a £5 from a number of places. The number of tracks on the cd shouldn't make a difference.

Hi Golfmk5gttdi, think you're getting confused with DVD's which come in DVD -/+R (as well as -/+ RW) formats. Recordable cds only come as CDR (write once) or CDRW (rewritable). I would also stick to the 80 minute discs as opposed to the 99 minute discs as these can be problematic with some burners / software.

There are several different types of grade available (dependent on the dye used) but as a rule of thumb TDK or Verbaitum are normally pretty good and generally availalable from places like PC World and Staples. Combine one of these with a slower burn speed and you should get discs readable on any player.

    Cheers.
