Just a follow up to yesterday's thread, I'm looking at the car, which is a lovely example, and thinking it's just too good to scrap, so was thinking about removing the head to assess the damage. Has anyone had the head off one of these engines and is it a job I could tackle at home. (I have re-built many engines years ago, and the last head I had off was my Golf Gti 8V ADY engine. which is much simpler, but I have not yet played with any diesel engines). Thanks.

If you remove the head it must not be refaced so usually that means a new head. As a new bare VAG casting 03G 103 351 B is daft money at £2781.60, we use new bare AMC castings which you can get for £700 and build it back up with all the cleaned and checked original parts or if it has taken a hit, they even do them with new valves fitted. Your main problem is going to be removing the cam carrier as the special jig is daft money for only one job and when I first needed one it was on back order so I made a quick copy of the VAG tool out of steel stock and it has lasted me years even though it was thrown together in a hurry.

Hi Crasher, thanks for the reply. This is what I feared re. the special tools. I wonder if you can hire that tool from anywhere? Purely out of interest, why can't the heads be skimmed?

I can now answer my own question, the heads can't be skimmed because it removes a coating which stops porosity. Just leaves the elephant-in-the-room special tool.

Yes, it is called HIP treatment for Hot Isostatic Pressing. The tool is called T10262 and thinking about it, you can probaly just tap the carrier off as a new head comes with a new one so you don't technically need it BUT the new AMC head comes with the carrier fitted so technically speaking you do need it!

Right. Thanks Crasher. I have a reasonable understanding of it all now. The cam carrier is obviously "glued" to the head with a bead of silicone, so removing it without distortion would be difficult. I have just watched a good video of someone building up and fitting an AMC head to a similar engine, it looks like the carrier is fitted but not siliconed. Anyhow, as you have said and done, it won't be that hard to make a tool should it come to that. I have 2 people wanting to make offers on the car as it stands, so we'll see how that pans out. Thanks again for all your help.
