    Hello guys,
So a month ago I finally found a nice 2010 Q5 2.0TDI with a manual transmission, engine code is CGLB. It had 148k miles, looked and drove perfectly. It still drives perfectly 1200 miles later but sadly
I found out that it is burning about a liter of oil every 300 miles or so. First I thought that its the oil sensor that's giving me a false reading but sadly not. The car does have some blue smoke coming out of the
exhaust when the engine is first started. Then after 2-3 minutes the smoke stops even if you rev it. I managed to miss that when I was inspecting the car before buying. The DPF is deleted by the previous owner
most likely because it clogged up from all that oil burning.
What I have done so far is that I've checked the turbo outlet pipe going to the intercooler for oil and there wasn't any. The shaft play on the turbo was minimal as well so I think it's safe to rule it as a reason
for the oil consumption. I also disconnected the CCV pipe running from the valve cover to the intake to see if its clogged or something but it was blowing the oil fumes as it should. I also did a 20 mile drive with the
pipe going to a catch can but it didn't collect any oil. So I'm thinking that the crankcase ventilation is doing its job. Sadly this brings me to the conclusion that maybe the only thing left is to rebuild the engine. I've
never heard of TDI's having oil burning issues and frankly that's why I bought a diesel instead of the tfsi since it's notorious for oil burning. The last hope for me is to replace the injector copper washers because I
did notice that there is some blow by black liquid in two of the injectors beds. I read that it could be a reason for oil consumption since a part of the injector is surrounded by oil and it may find its way into the combustion chamber.
However I find this to be a longshot and probably its going to be the oil piston rings all along... Have any of you heard of this kind of premature piston ring failure on a TDI?

    whats the back pressure like?
Is there no blue smoke at any other time?
In my experience if the rings are gone you will see blue smoke at the end of a motorway run when you lift off, and if the valve stems are gone you will see the blue smoke in the mornings and pulling off from lights where you have sat for a while.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm not sure what back pressure means, but as far as the blue smoke there is none when the engine is warm. It is most noticeable when you first start the engine.

Could you please specify what the problem is since it is common?

It depends on engine code and build date and I can get these from the VIN?

Vehicles built before 22.09.2011 suffered problems with the EGR cooler where the aluminum internals came away and got into the engine causing damage to the pistons and rings plus the pistons themselves by Alcan were a problem. The only cure is an engine rebuild or exchange unit 03L 100 091 CX and these come with the stipulation that the EGR cooler, DPF and turbo must be replaced with genuine parts to fulfill the warranty and this basically writes the car off as beyond economic repair.

Well that's a bummer. But wouldn't that mean that for the Q5 you would have 3 years worth of built cars that have this issue. I've talked to a bunch of mechanics in my area that have never heard of a 2.0 TDI burning oil. How is this a common issue if nobody has heard of it. Even searching through the english speaking part of internet there are maybe 3-4 cases total which probably relate to this problem. And how a car can run so good and have this kind of catastrophic underlying issue is beyond me...
