    Hi All

I'm looking at A4 Allroads, years 2016/2017, second hand purchase and notice that the 2 litre diesel is always S Tronic whereas the 3l V6 engine is often either S Tronic or tip tronic.

Can anyone give me some advice and perhaps own experience on whether one or the other is a better choice? Or if it's just preference on which you would want? I haven't yet driven either yet which will be my next important thing to do. I have always driven a manual but would like to go auto. More choice of second hand cars as well.

Lastly, assuming a proper maintenance regime of oil changes are they both just as reliable? I'd be looking at a car with around 100k mileage. With full service history if possible. Any particular major issues I should be aware of? Feels a bit of a minefield but that's likely my lack of knowledge!

    Thanks very much

3.0 TDi with 218 ps is the stronic and 272 ps is the tiptronic by ZF. The ZF is the stronger gearbox no real problems, oil change as per ZF ir 80-120k km or 8 years depending on driving style. The stronic is weaker, can develop problems with DMF (A6 C7 with 3.0 TDi had a load of these), and oil change is more frequently (don't remember the exact interval) and in audi service schedule (ZF is sealed for life iaw audi service schedule). Stronic shifts faster, but has one fewer gear - 7 -, ZF has 8 and get get better milage on high speeds. I like ZF better, it's bit more fluid, Stronic is rugher and tries to guess witch gear you want next, and preps that gear, that makes it faster when accelerating but bit jearkier in stop start traffic.
Also there's the engine choice, buy going stronic you get slower car due to 218ps engine you get it paired with.

I know I’m replying to older thread this year. Only thing I would add is ignore Audi sealed for life on ZF box. ZF make filter kit with new synthetic oil. Not cheap, but at 60k miles recommended it won’t do any harm. The oil viscosity thins, and if you tow or operate in high temperatures, then that reduces effectiveness of oil. The way I see it is prevention is better than cure. New Tiptronic box will be more than car is worth, so worth it.

Tiptronic box in sport mode pulls like a train.
