Which battery should it have - lead acid with "calcium technology" or just plan lead-acid, or can it handle either?

I've been surprised to find that the battery it has had for over a year is listed online as having "calcium technology", even though I can see no mention of this on the battery.

This battery seems to rest at a higher voltage than a standard battery and I read that charging requirements are different and can damage equipment.

Could wrongly fitting a calcium battery have caused a recent alternator failure?

The VW recommend part number is 000 915 105 DG and in Tec Doc this cross references to the old BBMS number 096 so the 027 you have is a little under spec at 62Ah instead of 67Ah.

There are all sorts of hyped up battery Tec such as “carbon boost” “3DX grid tech” “silver tech” “calcium” “silver calcium” etc and we are finding all modern batteries, especially fancy ones, to be utter ***** such as Bosch, Yuasa, Exide, Varta etc. We have just about given up on finding a decent reliable AGM technology battery.

Thankyou very much. That part number is good to have.
There is a Bosch battery with that part number at https://www.*******.co.uk/bosch/1145148 and it is not described as a calcium battery.
That is interesting too to read of your experience with modern batteries. Does that include OEM ones? I thought they tended to last a long time.
Why do you think they are so rubbish? The actual technology or are they more fussy about charging profile?
Good to see you supporting Ukraine btw. Do you watch Davydov etc?

Not heard of Davydov, YouTuber? I think the reason modern batteries don’t last is a combination of the bloody stupid stop start nonsense and the use of so much recycled lead. The worst battery of all we found was the Yuasa 5000, every single one we fitted failed and each warranty unit failed so we changed to using Varta and they keep failing. The AGM 096 in our Passat loan car is its third in a year, the conventional Varta in Mrs Crashers Polo lasted 9 months and the conventional Bosch in my daily used 22 year old Octavia lasted a year. We would like to fit genuine but a 096 AGM is £331.20

I'm astonished at that. Those batteries all had such a good reputation - with me at least.
I wonder if Duracell or Jenox might be any good. I did buy a Duracell for my daughter's X-trail several years ago but she sold it too soon to be a useful test. A very quick search suggests some of them at least might be made in America and I read that Jenox are made in Poland.

Yes Davydov is on Youtube - and Telegram. I watch him most evenings.

To be honest I give up with 12 volt starter batteries, I need something that works.
