    Hello,
Was wondering if someone could give me a ballpark figure for a timing chain replacement cost on a 2010 2.0tfsi CDNC engine. 113k on it.
I checked the camshaft adaptation phase value on VCDS and it's at 6.7 degrees. Can also hear what sounds like a chain noise for a second when I stop the engine.

Have owned the car since 2018, no idea if the tensioner is original or not.

Avoiding Chinese Replacement Auto Parts but not necessarily all genuine parts and doing the full job including balancer shafts, oil pump cam bridge, oil valves, electro magnets, solenoids etc you can easily spend £1500 in parts alone. Being longitudinal the labour is longer than transverse due to the necessity of dropping the sump brake plus fasteners and alignment. The job takes around three working days so roughly £1500 depending on the labour rate. If the person doing the job has never done one, there is considerable investment required in tools and the parts used have to be very carefully selected to include revised components when necessary, I can’t remember how many times the oil pump has been revised.

Thanks crasher, there is a VAG specialist not far away so I will drop over during the week and see what they say. Will then need to weigh up if it's worth spending that kind of money on a 13 year old car or not.
If they're happy enough to just do the chains, guides and tensioner that would be enough for me. Car is only worth maybe £3k anyway

They have to balance what they do with “will it work” or will you both be left with a pile of scrap and lots of money lost on both sides. The brave (and inexperienced) will rush in there without a care, those with some miles under their (timing) belts will (politely) tell you to do one. One point I keep trying to put over is you cannot fix a car based on its value, follow that path and at some point it will not be worth filling the tank.

I'm sure we can have a reasonable conversation without anyone being told to 'do one' , politely or not. If he doesn't want to take on with the job that's his choice
