Water pump and repair kit for cambelt

Hello everyone,

Recently i noticed my front crankseal started to leak and i am getting stuff ready to replace it. While doing it i want to replace the cambelt and water pump even tho i am 40k miles from when it needs doing, last done @225-228k miles now curently clocking 205k miles and at the rate i am driving this will reach 210k by the time i get the job done.

So far i got myself ready with the oil, oil filter the front crankshaft flange/seal and the oil pump belt as while changing the flange seal and getting the sump of makes sense replacing it. Last time i done the cambelt and water pump, 2 and a half years ago i remember vw was revising water pumps and so called repair kit (cambelt, tensikners and rollers) at a very fast rate.

Now i am about to buy the water pump and belt kit and after few phone calls to local seat vw skoda dealerships i get conflicting informations about waterpump part numbers and kits.

The last part number i fitted for water pump was: 04L121011N and the kit for belt was 04L198119K. Does this still stands? One of the dealerships said i need 04L121011P for water pump the other confirmed i need 04L121011N.

Does anyone have acces to the updated info?

As you know the front seal is integral with the front cover, new part number 04L 103 151 A and £123 genuine but much less aftermarket such as the Febi 46749 which we now stock as we use that many.



VW say you can do this with the sump on but we tried and it leaked. You must use the T10053/1 over the crank nose (clean, dry, no oil) which MUST also be absolutely clean, dry and free of oil for the Teflon seal and the correct D 176 501 A1 sump paste. The bolt for the belt drive must be renewed plus absolutely dry and unlubricated and the torque spec is

1st stage: 180 Nm
2nd stage: Use rigid wrench to turn 90° further
3rd stage: Use rigid wrench to turn 45° further

Without the 3415 counterhold tool this is almost impossible.




The belt kit is 04L 198 119 K at £211.92 and the pump 04L 121 011 N at £158.64

Thanks alot for clearing up for me the part numbers for the pump and belt kit first of all, it seemed odd to me why theg would sell me the part number with P for water pump.

I have already the tool to guide the seal in i am still hunting for the couterhold tool as you say even if i manage to get it off without would be imposible getting the angles after 180Nm torque without it. I know snap on sell it to garages and maybe vag also but not to me (i asked already).

Sump paste part number is a bonus that i was trying to get hold off...

I kind of disagree with vw that the seal can be replaced and seal properly without sump off and that is based on similar designs on other engines and i do not want to take the chance.

P is the old number, it changed in March 2020 so they are either stupid or lying. Yes it surprises me VAG suggest that idea as to me it would stress the seal and push the sealant into the sump. Laser do the tool Laser Tools 6658 Crankshaft Holding Wrench - for VAG. If you have a cooperative TPS or VAG dealer the tool genuine is only £74.92 retail inc.

Hy with yet another question or doubt? What is the seal 04L103151 ( i have one made in france vw ag but seems to have the flange seal to sump side compared with febi one?) same with 04L103151 A?

Later add:
Doing a bit of online research seems like 04L103151 vw part is done by Freudenberg ( corteco) considering the under seal sump side make sense why vw is saying can be replaced without taking sump off.

04L103151A seems to be the same but not 100% sure and genuine made by a firm in hungary; looking at the pictures of the one i have on the car when i done my cambelt initially to bad i did not pay more atention to it back then.

If any use to anyone browsing the forum 04L103151 vw part was factory fitted on my car and has the Freudenberg corteco part number on it and the vw on rev v300 the new part i fitted was v320; 04L103151A vw part is identical except it does not have a seal sump side and seems to be made by a different company i cannot identify from the markings. 04L103151 can be fitted without taking oil sump off and reasealing on the other hand 04L103151A needs oil sump off and to be resealed. if you also want to check the oil pump belt or replace in the preocess of replacing the seal flange does not matter.

I can confirm without the counterhold tool is imposible to torque to spec the crank bolt and quite hard to take old one out i had to use a 3/4 1.2m braking bar and socket. very hard to achieve the last 45 degrees step to the point i thought either the counterhold or socket will snap.

I advice anyone atempting this to have a look if any oil leak makes also its way down from cam cover behind the block as is easier to do all in the same time (discovered today i have a leak there and now i have to get back in there).
