    Hi guys,
I need a new family car and having never owned an MPV before, we're seriously considering a Touran.

The examples we're looking at are mostly the 1.6TDI from the 2010-2013 era, the second facelifted version, with around 100K on the clock.

I'd really appreciate any advice you could give me in terms of what to be aware of when looking at one of these.

    So my questions are -

    1. How much do running and maintenance costs differ from something like an Octavia or Golf Estate? How do things like the Clutch & Flywheel change compare in price?

    2. Are there many known reliability issues with the 1.6TDI? I imagine it's a little underpowered for the size of the car but is fuel consumption an issue?

    3. Was it affected by Dieselgate and if so is there any way to tell if a particular car has had the 'fix'?

    4. Likewise for the 2.0TDI from around this time - was it affected by the Oil Pump Hex Key/Cam Shaft issues, or dieselgate?

    5. Finally - is there anything to be aware of if we choose to go for an auto instead of a manual?

Any other advice also gratefully appreciated!
    Thanks

The CAYC 1.6 TDI engine is a disaster and if it has had the Diesel scandal recall done, even worse, I would NEVER advise anyone to buy a car with that engine.

Is thatthe 1.6TDI or is that an engine code for a particuarly bad one? Are all Tourans with the 1.6TDI going be awful, in other words?

That is the engine code for the more powerful 1.6TDI from 2010 to 2015, it was used right across the VAG range and suffers lots of expensive problems. There is also the CAYB which is only 90PS, it is not so common but the power difference is purely the engine programing and it has the same problems.

Injectors (£2500 a set fitted and coded), EGR cooler failure (approx £900 fitted), high pressure fuel pump failure which fills the system with metal filings and ruins the injectors (£ thousands), clutch failure, DMF rattling, oil pressure loss, porous cylinder heads, water pump failure, electric water pump failure, alternator failure... Pile Of ****!

Jesus, that's a horiffic list :P Cheers for the enlightenment.

What's a decent Vw engine these days? IS the 2L in the Vw Scirocco, the likes of a 2013 decent enough?
Generally, what are the decent engine codes these days' worth purchasing in the VW / Audi group?

What causes the high-pressure pumps to fail, is there any particular reason that an owner could help to prevent this happening, or are they just poor-quality built pumps that just randomly fail?

The high pressure pumps fail mainly after a fuel filter change as people don't electrically purge the system and the units primary pump gerotor eats the ally housing and sends sparkle dust through the high pressure system

but it can also be linked to misfuelling and also simply random; even a cheap Bosch exchange pump is £700 and new genuine nearly £1700! Good VAG engines? God knows, everything since the 1.8T has been a pain; I suppose the latter 2L EA888 petrol IF it has been well serviced but the TDI's are becoming a joke, the EA288's are now throwing a party trick of VVT unit failure which starts at £3k and can hit £6K, it is all getting a bit too much.
