Hi, firstly let me say this is actually for an Audi A4 B6, 2002, I posted this question in another forum but did not get an answer so trying here in the hope this engine is more popular in the Passat

I have a '02 1.6 petrol, engine code ALZ with a P0322 Engine Speed Sensor (G28): No Signal

Whereabouts is the sensor? All my web searches yield other engines and I have a Haynes manual but it just covers the 1.8 (was given to me, I didn't buy the wrong one!). And is it easy to change?

This is the engine with the single ignition coil, not the one with the individual coil per plug. I attach a pic of it, thanks!

It is down at the back of the block on the cars left directly below the coolant expansion tank is is held into the engine by a 5mm hex cap screw. This points directly at an 60-2 impulse rotor on the back of the crank web behind cylinder 4. The part number has been revised to 071 957 147 which costs £129.27 but you can get the aftermarket from Bosch under their number 0 261 210 177 for less but beware of cheap unknown brands, the G28 is THE critical engine running sensor and cheap ones may work but cause random glitches which can confuse diagnostics.

Thank you so much for the detailed reply. So this is on the inlet side? I fount a connector with 3 pins on the bulkhead but it appeared to be going off to the exhaust side, maybe it was something else.

It was raining here in Dublin today, I'll try to get a look during the week and report back. I'll have a look on auto Doc for that p/n, thanks.

Hi I've only got a chance to get back to this today, before I tell you my findings a little background.

Car has had cold starting issues for over a year now and I found unplugging the MAF makes it start. I didn't want to just replace it without doing some diagnosis so recently got a loan of a cable for VCDS Lite. Another fault developed where it stalls at pretty much the same point into my into work and home again. VCDS indicated the sensor (forget what it said about MAF).

Anyway today I measured the resistance of the crank sensor and was 885R pins 2/3 and open pins 1 to 2 or 3. So given it stalls when warm I let it idle until it stalled and measured again, pins 2/3 now open! so, a result confirming bad sensor.

I'll be surprised if this fixes the cold start issues since it seems to be OK when cold, but who knows. One thing, I accidentally started it with the crank sensor disconnected and it started fine! Is this normal, can it work just off the cam sensor?

I followed the cable to the back of the block under the coolant tank as described, was going by feel and it seemed to go into a larger harness. Access looks impossible - is this done from under the car?

Thanks Crasher and mickeybo for your posts, most helpful.

    Hi,

Just another update, job done at the weekend and it was located as described, just near the oil filter, a little to the right of it as you're looking at the filter.

Removed a U shaped, circa 25cm long support bracket that went from the block to the inlet manifold for better access (this is on an A4 assume Passat is the same). Got it from under the car. A mate was helping, I guided in the socket set and he did the turning from up top.

If anyone is doing this, and you are near an oil change, removing the filter will make life a lot easier.

Thanks again for all your help!
