I fitted the new parts this evening, the plastic relay lever which came with the new sliding show white plastic bushing and also a new clip for this new design.
I tried to keep it in neutral so as not to mess the alignment but I had to move the gear lever into 6th in order to remove and fit the relay lever due to clearance at the gear box mount.

Anyway, afterwards, 3rd was now 1st and so I had to set the alignment by locking the selector and it's pin, releasing both cable adjusters, then locking the gear stick with a 4mm drill bit. Then I released the cable adjusters, released the selector pin and then the gear stick drill bit. Is this the correct order to do the alignment?

I now have the gears back in their correct place, but 1st gear is still a pain to select and a little worse even. I used to always be able to get it by going into 2nd first but that's not always working for me now and this technique had started to stop working as much in the last few weeks.

Edited to say: The old relay lever is worn at both the sliding shoe bush and on it's pivot piece that goes through the cylinder where Crasher linked to being a common area to seize above. Mine wasn't seized but the plastic piece is just worn.

Does this youtube video of a problem with 1st+2nd gear selector fork on a Mk4 affect the Mk5 too and could this be my problem?

Does my alignment need fine tuning or does it look like I have a more serious problem within the gear box itself? Every other gear is perfect including reverse and 2nd.

The method is to put the adjusters in the open position and then lock the box with the built in peg, lock the gear lever with a 4mm drill and then release the cable tocks. If this don't make it perfect then there is fault inside the box usually, the gear selector unit in the car is extremely reliable, unlike the Golf 2 16v gear shift system I am fixing today... Golf 1 and 2 gear shift system could never be accused of being reliable!

I tried setting the alignment again and couldn’t get it any better.

So I dropped into a gear box repair place beside my work and he found he could get it to go into 1st when pressing down a bit first as if going for reverse. He said I might have some wear on the gear stick bushes. He got 1 of his workers to adjust the cable whilst he was holding the gear stick. The other chap basically adjusted the cable by moving it 2 or 3 threads on the adjuster. I had wondered if it mattered where the adjuster ended up on the threaded rod, I just let it find its own spot.

    It’s fine now, thank god!
I wonder if I should look into renewing some of the bushes / parts around the gear stick, I don’t mind changing them as keeping the car long term and it has big miles now.

Is part no.15 the metal gear stick shaft itself and does it come with al them littler components numbered 4/5/6/7/9? Or is it them individual parts without the actual metal shaft? What's that no.8 part?
It'd be some job with all them components renewed, it's already a lot tighter and nicer feel, them other parts should have it like new as they would be new

The bracket thing indicates that the other numbered items are included in part code 15, which is the gearshift lever. There's a picture here of what part 8 does:GUIDE: How to make your O2J shifter feel less sloppy and other information. | TDIClub Forums
