    Ok.

The gearbox is MNK. The mechanic noticed lateral movement between the front passenger side shaft and the box. He removed the shaft and tried to change the bearing at the box, but found that it was moving and wouldn't seal. He cannot see a way to fix this other than a replacement box.

Ohh ****, the 0B5, AKA the DL-501-7Q... absolute piece of junk, not fit for purpose. We have an A7 sitting at our gearbox specialists waiting for the owner, a Mercedes dealer and the RAC warranty to come to a decision on it as the box cannot be rebuilt and is £10k! Even Audi will not provide a reconditioned exchange version of his and your box. As of June 2015, a new unit for your car has changed part number to 0B5 300 058 F 001 and this is what is known as a VIP or Vehicle Intelligent Part and has to be specially ordered from Germany to the cars VIN and the moment the parts person at TPS or an Audi dealer presses the order button, that's it, you own it and it cannot under any circumstances be canceled or returned so you have to pay up front and that is £11694. Although you can buy a few parts from Audi such as the failure prone Mechatronic at £3942, this is also a VIP so if it fails to cure the problem, that's roughly £5k down the drain and then a new box; at least you get to keep it though, if the box is an exchange version you have to give it back! Personally if someone gave me a car with this box I would not have it for free.

Thanks for that. Am I understanding correctly that the box can't be stripped down and rebuilt?
It's a second car, so not the end of the world, but I wouldn't spend a lot of money on a thirteen year old car.

I know this thread is pretty old, but I've been trying to get a second hand box for this car, with no luck. It would be a shame to scrap it because it drives well apart from the bounceback from first to second and back to first when coming to a halt. I've noticed that this doesn't happen in Sport Mode. Could this be a software issue? Apart from the increased fuel consumption, are there any issues arising from driving in Sport Mode permanently? It's a second car so doesn't get a lot of use except in bad weather and I prefer the clearance over the A6. Any ideas would be welcome.
