    Hopefully someone out there knows!!

I'm trying to locate the whereabouts of the ignition / starter relay on a 2003 S4 Avant which intemittently refuses to start.

(The RAC gave up today and left mentioning that it could be a multifuction relay, that is then utilised for something else when the car is running)

Any help would be greatly appriciated, and may save an audi's life, as I may yet torch the car in the street!!!

There quite possibly isn't one, but I'm running out of things to check!!

Where would I find the engine code?
    (It's the 4.2 V8 with 6 speed manual gearbox)

The engine code will be BBK. If by not starting you mean not turning over, then the ignition switch feeds directly to the starter motor so an intermittent non cranking situation would be starter motor or ignition switch and the latter are a known problem area.

    Hi, cheers for the reply,

Yes, it's a non-cranking situation, I turn the key and nothing, other than fuel pump... After a while it sometimes starts, although no combination of key twisting, flicking etc. seems to make a difference - it just goes when it's ready.

The switch in the ignition barrel was changed out last week, but that hasn't fixed the problem. Do you suggest it's a fault with the starter / starter solenoid then?

Changed out. That’s an Americanism! Anyway, yes I think the starter would be the next part to change.

I suppose it is an Americanism!!
(the term get used for everything offshore, from pillows to compressors!!)

I was hoping it wouldn't be the starter, but there's not much left to try.
I could really do with the wiring diagram and just work through.

Keys all do the same, if a key chip is dodgy the car will start, then cuts out after a couple of seconds and says "Safe" on the dash. You see this in your own car by taking the battery out.

Wher would I get a copy of the starter circuit? Any ideas?
