    Hi guys,

I've had this problem for over a year now and its starting to get a little annoying. Only when its cold, and when i start the car in the morning a get the warning:

    STOP..Check Coolant...Manual Service.

It stays on until i switch the car off and turn it back on. It never happens in the summer only in the winter. About a year and a half ago i had the coolant sensor replaced.

I have checked the coolant level and its fine - everytime i have the car serviced by an ex-vw mechanic (who only uses VW parts) he tells me the coolant level is correct???

HAs anyone else had the same problems and is there something i can do to get rid off the annoying warning message.

P.S The temperature guage stays normal!!!

    Cheers guys,

I seem to have developed this same problem in the past week with my Golf. It's quite worrying as it flashes STOP, but it goes away after about a minute.

Apparently, its a common fault and something to do with the coolant tank being pressurised or something. Need to get it fixed... car needs a service next month, so will ask the mechanic to look at this while its in the garage.

Probably the sensor in the coolant reservoir is faulty.. Cheap to replace as well... Had to do it on mine about a couple of months ago.

When you get an error such as the ones you are getting, the system need to be re-set, and this is done by a small switch on the bonnet catch, so when you lift the bonet do the work that needs doing, when you drop the bonnet back down and start the car up, the car checks all the systems, so even if the problem has been fixed if the switch is broken it will not reset the warning lights on the dash.

    Hi all,

My '99 1.6 SE Auto has just developed this fault this morning and like L_8hav I had my coolant sensor replaced last year. I'm guessing its the same fault as I don't have the digital display. With me the coolant light flashes and beeps at me for about a minute before going out. Coolant level looks fine, mid way between min and max at cold.

I guess this is the coolant expansion tank that has the sensor in? How easy is this tank to replace or should i get VW to do this during my annual service (due in 2 weeks but I guess they'll charge me the earth for doing it)? Had a quick look through the Hayes manual but can't find detail on removing the expansion tank.

    Many thanks,

    Olly

Is it possible to reset the switch without fixing the fault, and checking if it was only a temporary issue which can be resolved without actually fixing it? I.e. the problem may have sorted itself out (wishful thinking)?

Where is the small switch found? Whereabouts on the bonnet catch? I've got a MK4 Golf. Thanks

soon as the bonnet is lifted the system is reset, and the fault cleared, but when the car is started if the problem has not been fixed, it will regester the same fault again and it will keep doing this until the problem is fixed. the switch is just under the catch, you will be able to see the cable, you will be able to feel the switch, it is small.
