Hi, new to the forum and im looking to buy an Audi A4 1.8T, before I buy I wanted some advice on the engine, from what I've been reading online there are some real bad stories about them burning oil, chain problems and it being rather costly.

I also read that the 12plate or later models were Ok? I'm just asking for advice I don't want to go and buy a money pit, had enough of that with my old 3 series. What's people's experiences with the 1.8T A4? Looking to buy one with 60-70k on the clock if that makes a difference. I'd be ok with getting an A5 1.8T but I'd imagine they suffer with the same problems?

    Thanks for any responses

Yes there have been some awful problems with the EA888 engine both in 1.8 and 2.0 form and not just in the A4.

Generally 1.8t suffers from these specific oil burning issues a LOT less than the 2.0t. I have a 2011 a4 1.8t with around 70k and it doesnt burn much if any at all and my vw specialist also confirmed that to me who is always working on a bunch of various vw/audis with 2.0t engine suffering from the same oil burning issues.

Having said that my experience with Audi was still not trouble free. There is a very common pcv breather failure on these engines along with frequently failing injectors, broken plastic water pumps, engine mounts, interior bangs, heater matrix leakage, oil seepage and random electronic failures here and there. These are all the problems I have dealt with already in less than an year of ownership and I am over and done with vw/audis

Doesn't sound like it would be a wise buy then, I would really like to buy a nice A4 S-Line but if it could be more trouble then it's worth I think I'll have to stay clear and opt for something else.

Are the A3s more reliable, I can't really go higher than 1.8 due to insurance reasons, seems like the 1.6 A3 is my only option.

Regarding A3 ask in A3 section, probably get better feedback then here. Used car is always 50% lottery. I have 0 regrets! 100 per year for repair is nice total(at least for me), but yes, some have all this in first year. Proper service history to see if main faults have been repaired and pre buy full checks to avoid bad news, like you see in forums every day and with audis have 1000 spare money in pocket!

I've got the A4 1.8 TFSI and can recommend it as a brilliant engine.

I did a fair bit of research and I found that significantly fewer people made complaints about the 1.8 TFSI 170 engine vs the 120.

It seems the 170PS version was reworked quite heavily - I've got a 2012 model is that helps.

I reckon mine burns about 1 litre every 5-7 thousand miles. Well within what I'd call acceptable levels.

In the 2.5 years and 28,000 miles I've driven, the car hasn't really missed a beat except for a few electronics issues with the breaking system.

What's the total mileage on the car?

Can anyone say how reliable the 2.0 Diesel is? Though petrol would probably be better for me as I'm not traveling distance it's mostly town driving. I just want something that's going to last me a few years, I expect some issues obviously but I don't want to have a major job costing £££.
