Hi everyone, I'm new here and need some advice. I took my A6 3.0 tdi to an independent to change the transmission fluid, gasket and filter. However they mistakenly used the wrong ATF fluid. They used an equivalent of lifeguard 5.... Febi Bilstein G052 162 A2, which is for 4 and 5 speed transmissions only. Approximately 4 and 3/4 litres was changed, so assuming there are 9 litres in total (including torque converter) that would leave me with approximately 53% of incorrect oil. I'm now planning on draining and refilling 3 times with ZF lifeguard 6 which should bring the error down to about 5.5% assuming approximately 4 and 3/4 litres drain each time. My question is how long should I wait between changes, and what is the best way to get the transmission fluid flowing and mixing? Should I drive? or should I just leave the car running in gear? and for how long? Any advise would be welcome.

    Thanks

Hi, thanks for your reply. I take it that you did this on your 2.7TDI right? Isn't that a CVT multitronic box and not a tiptronic box? The two have different ATF specs.... Having said that I did drive the car once after the incorrect fluid change and there was no discernable difference.... Gear changes were slick and responsive. But I still will change the fluid as I think the long term there would be problems.

How long ago did you change your transmission fluid?

Check my other post and inside there thats the oil used. Its a tip gearbox oil change not long ago, dont really think it will cause too much problem and will change oil every 20k miles. However i would also listen to any suggestions.

By looking that oil spec it seems for 5hp series.

OK thanks I looked at the thread you started, I too only got under 5 litres changed over. I'm planning on getting 3 changes done today with lifeguard 6, this will correct my error from 53% to 5.5%.

ZF 6HP series takes lifeguard 6 or 8 iirc. The one i put in is Dexton III so thats 5HP series.

Believe Dexton VI is for 6HP but need confirm.

I dropped the pan so thats only about 4.5L only changed. It only done no more than 1000miles since then so cant really tell people thats ok or not.

However will change to Liftguard 8 in couple of thousand miles just in case.

I think it's dependent on year that the gearbox was manufactured. From what I understand, lifeguard 6 (G055 005 A2) was used for factory fill up until 2008. From then on it was lifeguard 8 (G060 162 A2). However Audi appear to push lifeguard 8 regardless of what the factory fill was. This I suspect is because it supersedes lifeguard 6, but you would need a software upgrade on the gearbox otherwise damage results. This pretty much makes you go to Audi to get it done.

Any suggestions anyone on how long I should wait between my 3 drain/refill sessions today? Should I take the car for a short drive or just let it run in gear for 30 mins or so?

A general filling procedure, i.e. shift between PRND and 2000RPM idle, should be enough for the oil to circulate and mix together.

I still have 3 liters of dexton III oil from the previous seller, what I would do is just put them in as a general flush, then do a complete drain and filter+fluid replace by ZF LG8.

As a general lubricant point of view don't really think LG6, LG8 or Dexron VI have too much differences. However unlike manual, ATF also used as a hydraulic fluid, and that's the point makes all the differences.

The ecu update will change the solenoid switch time. Compared to my friends new car with same gearbox with LG8, the new SW switches faster, therefore I would guess LG8 have higher viscosity to allow faster switch.

So my conclusion would be LG6 or LG8 for old SW, and LG8 only for new SW.

Also I would think your gearbox will be fine for a short while but just get it change asap.

I am also doing research now and above is just only my point of view, corrections welcome.

    Update:
Here's some research result, will change my ATF asap as mine Febi 14738 Dexron III doesn't look good at all. All the rest are claim to be LG6 or LG8 compatible.

    Viscosity 40C
    Lifeguard 6 26.8
    Lifeguard 8 26
Febi 14738 Dexron III (Wrong type) 35.9
    Duralife 6HP 27.8
    Duralife 8HP 26.1
