I have a 66 BE A6 Avant with LED head lights.

We will be taking it to France in a month or so - previously I have used the stick on things to adjust head light direction and also had a car with a switch to adjust the direction.

How does it work with the A6? I heard it mentioned that it may be automatic depending on GPS location?

I think it's supposed to be automatic but I just changed mine to "driving on the right" in the Mmi manually to be sure.

Only problem is (at least on my pre-fl car) the setting switches off the asymmetric part of the beam, which works, but also vastly reduces light output. Driving on an unlit and unfamiliar N Road in the rain wasn't fun!

I haven't seen that setting in the MMI on mine - where is it?

Somewhere in the car menu - exterior lighting possibly? Unless they've removed it on later models!

Yep. Under the CAR, vehicle settings menu. Having used it abroad it does switch off one of the leds but it's not that much of an issue - just turn on the all weather front lights for a bit of compensation. Hth

In my MY2017 A6 Avant it says in the manual, and it was confirmed by the dealer too, that the moment you start the engine on the other side of the Channel the lights will automatically adjust for driving on the right-hand side of the road. Mine are standard Xenons, and I am rather anxious to try them in Europe, but probably not this year. It might be a challenge to persuade French Police that this is the case if they stop you. Mind, vehicles built after September 2016, I think, do not have the headlights option anymore in the MMI.

This maybe true but if you get the boat over the GPS doesn't pick up until your on dry land - you can try and see if it will auto switch but I've just done it manually. Mine is a Jan 17 build and the option is still there but it's a BE - could be different for those with Xenon.

I understand this was the case with the pre-FL Xenons but following the facelift the new version of the Xenon headlights has a much flatter beam profile and does not require adjusting fro driving in Europe. That said I would not like to be argueing the point with a foreign policeman

My 2012 SLine with Xenons has the option on the MMI. Doesn't seem to make much difference to be honest. Just got back from a week over the channel and they worked fine.
