MMI in my 2010 Q5 failed. Local Audi dealer couldn't fix and said Module 5f needs replacing for over £2.5k! I can get a replacement one from eBay for £600 (part no 8T2035670D - not yet bought) but local dealer is refusing to take component protection off if I get it fitted. Anyone else got experience of dealers doing this?

So I've contacted an independent who said they would do the work to install unit and take off CP but that I need to check hardware number of replacement unit (he said the no. is on same label as part no.) to make sure it matches the failed unit in my Q5. I've never heard of this. Does anyone know if the hardware number is important?

Some years ago I intend to fit a reverese cam into my former A6/C6 in an MMI specialist garage. They told me, that they are not able to do it with the current configuration, as the main MMI system is too old, and needs to be replaced in order to install the reverse cam. I remember I dropped this need, because the replacement of the MMI module was too expensive for this request.

So, in short, yes, there are different MMI versions, and maybe the HW# is the correct comparisation number with your current MMI module. However I suggest to ask the garage to purchase you the module to be sure, it will perfectly fit, more of it, you could ask them, are they able to repair the damaged unit, or not.
