Feels as tho the system is a more complicated/elaborate setup....as... eventually the heat does start to come thro the heater matrix into the car... but this is only after a forseable amount of time ...c45-50 mins when it is a cold winters morning etc; the warm coolant that would be available say in the first 10-15 mins is not being allowed to be directed thro the heater matrix (this is leaving aside all concepts of the auxiliary heater assisting in heating coolant in the early parts of a winter journey etc)

Anyway ... getting to the point that this is being potentially over-thought; may just need to just invest in someone who can understand how the coolant and flows are meant to work; and check and replace any faulty valving etc. Cheers for your input.

Update on my heating woes: Car was in dealers today for an oil change. Also asked them to run diagnostics and quote me for repairing solving the slow heat up issue. What I wasn't expecting ; was for them to have the car all day; and then report back that ; yes they recognise the slow heat buildup issue but they did not pick up any diagnostic fault codes... therefore they recommend I just monitor the fault.... and I am no further forward.... They kind of pooh pooed my self diagnostic/Carista code recording, as being not recognised by them etc.... told them I was very disappointed that they seem incapable of pinpointing/ picking up the errors codes...

On the 45 min journey home same issue was prevalent e.g.; no heat coming thro to cabin despite controls set to hi heat etc

So... where do I go from here ... buy another's weeks worth of carista... and record the codes again... and go back and see the dealer all guns a blazing..??

It would appear that.... so far.... Audi seem incapable of quickly pinpointing the issue and giving an estimate for repair....

Be glad for any advice chaps...

The problem here is that most 'techs' simply cannot diagnose a fault unless it shows up on a computer screen. Not everything in the world comes with a fault code. Send a PM to Crasher, see if he can help. Good luck.

The two way valve appears to be a vacuum operated flow control valve operated by solenoid N147. here is some info for skoda but probably similar system on your car, some checks you can do on the N147 solenoid and if it is vacuum operated 2 way valve in the coolant circuit you can probably cycle it with a hand held vac pump if the N147 is not working and see if your flow and heat improves.

    Thanks for the feedback guys...

Whippy; I don't know if they are telling fibs or being elusive; but I think/thot that these codes are showing up on there screens; and that they should be able to act on them ....as opposed to pulling the old 'no fault found- customer to monitor' one etc. The main reason that I go to/use the Audi main dealers is for there manufacturers diagnostic equipment and expertise... hmmmm...

Update; just re-run Carista diagnostics: The two heating related fault codes are still there... plus an additional 4 related fault codes !?! FFS!... the new codes potentially on the back of the dabbling/investigations they carried out yesterday...

Rob; thanks for the detailed insight into the potential root of the problem; that's the most background I've heard from any source on this... to be honest it sounds a bit complicated for me to get into... I'm now In a quandary as to whether to escalate this with the investigating dealer ... which is prob where I am at the moment... this will be good for my blood pressure... hah...

Thanks again guys ....going to try and keep this one moving along... need heating in car for the coming fall...

New additional fault codes after dealer investigation/actions to solve original reported issue (sigh)

I'm not sure how you intend to play this with the dealer but if it were my car, I'd clear those fault codes and see what comes back. Then I'd see what temperature your engine is actually running at after 10 minutes or so ( ignore dash temp gauge) I don't know if that carista app can show actual coolant temperature (suspect it can if you know where to look). You should be stable in high 80's or low 90's after 10 minutes or so of driving. then find and measure the temperature of the heater matrix supply and return hoses and that 2 way diverter valve. If you are getting hot coolant into the matrix and hot back out then it could be the mixing flap positioner fault. If the engine is struggling to get to normal operating temperatures then suspect it is the coolant thermostat ( I think there are two stats on those 2 litre common rail engines, one is fitted in a hose). If the engine is at normal temp but no hot coolant to the matrix then possibly that N147 solenoid or 2-way valve at fault. I use an infra red thermometer and K type thermocouple around my engine to get temperature readings, along with VCDS. These IR thermometers are pretty cheap and useful around the house when working on central heating etc.
I'm not an expert on these cars or engines and someone else may have a better idea, it might be related to that 00631 code as well. I think you are getting fobbed off a bit at the dealers.

I have come to hate dealing with Glasgow Audi. Most recently they screwed up with the wrong courtesy car (also filthy) and then introduced a £15 per day charge for it. Turns out the technician had the music on full blast during a road test. Maybe I should remove all music and detune the radio next time so I can he can actually listen for any issues. I guess he didn’t spot the front and rear dash cams… or just didn’t care.

One of my clients had no luck with a recurring fault at Ayr or Glasgow recently and ended up trying Arnold Clark Wishaw It’s just an Audi approved service and repair centre and not a dealer, but they sorted the problem under warranty. A bad situation when Arnold Clark is outperforming main dealers… no offence to any Arnold Clark employees

In the past week I have had the AC seemingly turn off and the screen mist up twice. It’s still turned on, but it’s the same effect as turning it off manually. The air is noticeably warmer so I don’t think it’s just recirculation enabling itself. No HVAC (or any other) fault codes with VCDS so I might give Carista and a dongle a try to see how it compares.

Well I have just given Carista a try with an Elm 327 adapter and no faults on the quick scan. On the more info/full ecu scan option it didn’t connect to most modules (or my second and third engines ) but still no faults on the ones it did read. So I’m no use for working out if there is a discrepancy between VCDS and Carista… let alone the proper Audi diagnostics.

Maybe someone can confirm if Carista/VCDS should show the same faults as the Audi setup? Might be time for a visit to an independent for a second opinion though?
