oh aye, yes. but, could also be a blocked fuel filter or water in the fuel. the filter needs changing regardless, so why not try it first.

This sounds spookily like what happened to my 2005 2.0TDi. It drove normally, then lost power when trying to accelerate. I'd back off the throttle and try again and it would be fine. Then it would happen again - and I noticed HUGE clouds of black smoke behind the car. No faults were logged, and the dealer it got recovered to was stumped. They replaced lots of parts (MAF, ECU, fuel filter, tank, fuel lines) and still the car did it. Finally they figured out it was the EGR valve - the flap had become detached from the spindle inside the valve, so the flap was sticking in the open position even though the sensor saw the spindle was in the closed position (hence no faults logged). A new EGR valve later and all was good. Might be worth getting the EGR valve checked?

    Good luck!

thanks for your thoughts MF, had a call from the audi specialists and they say the timing is out by 2 notches and this needs to be sorted before they can go any further, basically they are doing a cambelt and pump change first and take it from there! i knew the belt needed doing but was saving it for the summer shutdown but the mechanic is "talking the talk" and knows what he"s on about compared to the previous garage! so sometime early next week i"m going to get one hefty bill!

update for anyone interested, the garage replaced the injectors and have now found that the problem stemmed from a blocked dpf which didnt show up on the dash as a fault because when it was remapped they turned the lamp off.(dont really know the right words for this) anyhow the filter blocked so the gases blew the turbo and the injectors too. so as it stands its cost me £2400 and still no guarantee that it will solve the problem!! thanks again to all who offered advice on the problem.. to be continued

final update, so after 10 weeks i finally got the car back today 15/3/17, in exchange i had to hand over £3680, so basically it had most of the fuel/exhaust systems replaced, . turbo and harness, egr valve, dpf cleaned out (blocked solid) tandem fuel pump, 4 injectors, the alledged remapped ecu reset to factory condition, drives just the same as when it was supposed to have been mapped.oil feed line, crank seal and pick up ring, crank sensor, fuel filters and bolts etc, looking at the bill, i have done pretty well on the labour side, so the car isnt perfect but its running . the dpf light still doesnt light up when the ignition is switched on, i assume its supposed too, but i dont care at the moment, once the novelty of having it back has worn off i will look into it.
so a warning to all those thinking of having a remap, make sure if the dpf is deleted make sure the insides have been removed !!!!. final thought, i now believe the car was remapped by the previous owner and the mobile bloke knew it and got a easy £180 off me,the mapper has disappeared off the planet, no answers to calls or email and the facebook profile has also gone, so next time i will use a garage, if there is a next time!!!
thanks to all who responded to my plea for help and i hope my experience helps out someone else and avoid the expense!!!
