    Hi,

My 2001 1.9tdi has an intermittent fault, which only ever happens when the engine is in the process of warming up (After a few miles and with the temp. guage halfway between cold and 90 degrees)...

The car suddenly (almost like flicking a switch) loses power, but keeps on running.
I have discovered that if I pull over, turn the ignition off and then re-start the fault disappears.

I am guessing that this is a sensor fault.... any ideas please?

Take it to a garage and get a fault code read done. This will probably show an over boost error which can be due to jammed turbo vanes.

    Ok.

Please forgive my ignorance, but will this show up all recent faults.... not just those that are rearing their ugly head at the time?

In other words, I won't get a "Nothing wrong with it now mate.... you must need a new turbo/leave it (and your wallet with us)!!"

The ECU memory is non volatile and it will store current and historic faults. You should pay around £25 for a basic scan but to be sure you are seeing the true state of faults you need to go a little further. Ask them to read and print out the codes and then clear any codes they have found, but they must print them out first. Then take (or get the garage to) it for a run and get the fault to re-occur and re-read and print the codes. I would expect you to pay around £50 for this from an independent and around £9,143,832.12 from VW, OK-around £100 then if they are feeling generous . This second code read you can trust as being relevant and then post them (and the originals) on here for us to take a look at and recommend a course of action.

    Thanks for the advice Crasher.

Getting the car to 'do the fault' at the garage was my concern, as it only does it once or twice a week, and always only when the engine is in the process of warming up... it never re-occurs during the same run.

I was very interested to hear of your problem as I have a similar problem that is also cured by turning off the ignition. The only differance I have is that the problem occurs when the revs are high, overtaking, driving up hill, but always at 3000-3500 rpm.

Does your fault only happen when the engine in still in the process of warming up?

The fault seems to happen when the engine has warmed up. There is no particular time or mileage distance. I traveled 200 miles on my way to France and suddenly on a steep incline on the M5 the turbo cut out.

And mine has never happened with a warm engine.
Sounds like a similar fault though...... Keep us posted!
