Check the power steering fluid level and do not use normal ATF fluid.

Check the cap for the fluid type its most likely G00200 A2

    look at this post.

    Power Steering oil change

I found that TPS are doing it for £8.07 a Bottle at the moment.

Ok thank you though my last power steering fluid to be put in was done with fluid supplied by an independent German car garage (i had a power steering pipe leaking that then burst) could they have used the wrong fluid? I've had the noise for a while but they are the ones that have done everything on it since I bought it though i didn't notice the noise when i bought the car, oh and what's tps?

there could be a very small leak, but check the power steering level first

the most important thing is check the Cap and see if it says either MINERAL or Hydraulic

Even after having the burst pipe repaired? Though admittedly they patched it instead of changing it as the higher cost of replacing it(this was done twice as the hose the first garage used wasn't good enough according to the second garage)will check the level and the type required tomorrow and post what I find about that thank you

you could take off the pipe and go to an agricultural engineer and get a hose made up, if a new one is really expensive

any connection can leak if not tightened up properly, or new seals fitted, nuts cross threading etc

My A6 needed topped up due the age of the mineral oil in mine at 10 year old, no leak thankfully; mineral oil breaks down over time

I can only say that " the muckabout factor" is different to every person, and having been at a 2nd garage ................................ then maybe a proper hose isn't that expensive an option ............... google hydraulic pipe repairs and get a quote

Nah it was fitting it that was the expensive side due to access not being good (i was told by the first garage that the pipe goes behind the engine so it would possibly be an engine out job, I don't know if this is right due to me not having a manual of any kind and no experience with audis or a v6) so the garage made the decision (and the second garage just did a better job of what the first garage did) though having spoken to people with more experience of power steering problems than me they said that a patched pipe shouldn't be a problem and that they have usually been fine for them
