I wanted to post this to see if anyone was having a similar experience filling up their A6. Mine's a 55 plate 2.7TDi manual FWD avant which I have had for two years and has done over 182k (40k of that has been in my ownership)

I find filling up to be a pain in the backside to be honest. I always find that after the first 'click', I can usually squeeze in up to an extra 10 litres but that involves a lot of gentle squeezing on the fuel pump and that can vary depending on the pump used and the foaminess of the diesel.

Typically I know I've had a decent fill if the DIS displays 700 or more miles and the gauge will read full for the first 75 miles before dropping.

I read somewhere on other forums that you can actually 'vent' the tank when filling with a secret button in the filler neck but that wasn't for the A6.

The reason i'm asking is so that I can do more reliable tank-to-tank mpg calculations. I don't think its possible with a "tank" being likely to vary so much in volume.

I have to rely on the DIS (on the '2' setting I am getting a long terms average of 44 mpg 50% motorway 50% a roads).

When I am brimming the tank prior to a long journey I always take 10l jerry can to the station and then top up when I'm home, it's quicker that way. And yes I can almost always get 7l in

The max I've had displayed on range in 1060 and the max I've had from a tank is 920, but appreciate that the quattro has a larger one.

Noticed that as well. I can get another 7-8 L in after the first pump cut-off. You can hear the fuel draining down so it's obviously backing up the fill pipe.

my chosen method is to reset the trip when the fuel light comes on, then put 30 liters in, about half a tank, that way the fuel light is the only variable, not the pump shut off, or how much you can get in the neck of the tank.
Or if you like put the 55 liters in for a full tank, red light at 5 liters... (all figures in my head, depends on the spec of your car)

if you think about the first post 10 liters after the first click and 75 miles before dropping, can we assume that the neck of the tank will hold 10 liters? and you are risking spilling fuel over the road?
