    Hi guys,

really sorry that my first post is a problem post, but that's the way the cookie crumbles.
    My story is:

Bought an A6 3.0 TDI avant a month ago, a sweet runner, 220 000 km on the clock, nothing wrong with her at all. Decided I'd really like to have the green service menu active and tinker a bit with the coding and the rest, so I bought a VAG COM kit off emanuals.com. It arrived today and since then, my life hasn't been the same. Before you ask, the cable seems legit, it says Ross Tech 12-12.

Unpacked the cable, installed the recommended version 12.12.3 and connected it to the car.
Got round to activating the green menu, did that all ok, went into the coding for the "07-Control Head" as I wanted to change the welcome screen logo, and then all went south. All of the screens in the car died. Pressed cancel in VCDS, switched off the ignition, plugged out the cable. Put the key back into the ignition, but the MMI screen was very slow to turn on. Now the really strange thing: as I would turn the ignition off, the MMI would turn ON! After a few back and forth's with the key, I decided I'd try and start the car, but it was giving all the signs of a dead battery. Strange, given that by that point I'd spent 3 minutes max with the ignition on.

Did a full scan and the only things reported were under voltage errors for most components. Cleared everything, but the error 00003 - Control Module 005 No or Incorrect Basic Setting / Adaptation was persistent. Not really sure how I managed to clear it as it wouldn't have it for a good while.

Things got back to normal by clearing all the errors, but even after 3 hours of charging the battery, the car wouldn't start, even tho the battery level indicator was at say 60%. Managed to start the car by jump starting it off a mate's Sprinter. It started 3 times since that, but I'm kind of worried about tomorrow morning... Has the battery fried itself? It was perfectly normal all this time and indicator always had it at 100%.

My question is: how did I manage to **** this up so badly? Has anyone else had this? I'd like to tinker some more in VCDS but I'm afraid of touching the thing after the unfortunate debut!

You're using a non genuine, Chinese clone cable.

If you didn't pay over £200 for the cable, 99% it'll be a clone.

Thanks for the reply Chris, in fact the 60 quid seemed way too cheap. It will have great use as a slingshot. Hopefully nothing's wrong with the car!

Small update, the car started fine in the morning, drove to work no problem. Started it after work do drive to my in-laws place (3 k away from work), got there no problem, but wouldn't start later. Getting the same symptoms of a flat battery (very slow cranking), but the battery indicator in the MMI says 80%. Didn't have a voltmeter on hand at the time (it was dark already, and pretty cold (3 deg C). I'll try to get a reading tomorrow. Time for a new battery or a new voltage regulator? I understand it's a big ole donk under the hood and cranking it over requires a lot of juice, especially in the cold. Any chance it could be a faulty regulator from the VCDS tinkering?

I'd love to, but I'm afraid of hooking it up. Call me a wuss, but Audi parts and service aren't cheep in my neck of the woods.

There is no need to hook up vcds, in your computer, where is vcds folder, there must be "debug" folder, in there is adaption and coding log, where you see what you changed etc...

All those things with vcds are usualy "operator" error or your battery was so f... dead that battery manager shut everything off !

But nearly dead battery with battery manager can cause all kind of issues! Many c6 3.0tdi in my tiny country had starter and ground problems over the years, its hard to diagnose! I dont belive its voltage regulator!
