hi, i have an 2002 plate audi a4 1.9tdi and i've got a big problem with water coming into the drivers side footwell when it's raining or i wash it. it seems to be comming from the top of the brake pedal and i've been told by an audi dealer that the ecu box is located behind the drivers footwell and the reason for water coming into the car is because water is getting into the ecu box and leaking into the footwell that way.they did not look at the car and told me i woud need a new ecu and new ecu box even though i have not had any other problems except for the water coming in the car. if anyone could help me with this it would be a great help, cheers.

The ECU is in the engine bay and no where near the drivers footwell.

The CCM is in the passenger footwell.

    Your dealer is, erm, misinformed.

Search the forum for the terms "leak OR leaky OR leaking AND water AND footwell" and start reading.

Hi i know only too well all about this as the same happened to me...

i opened my bonnet and at the top half of the engine where the battery is it was completely flooded!! i had to remove my battery and underneath this was a drain hole, it was full of leaves and crap, also underneath the brake servo just to left of the battery is another drain hole, i brushed away all the filth and the water rushed out.... it seemed the water was overflowing and entering my car trickling down my accellerator pedal too... watch out though as on the accellerator pedal there is a little black box with electronics in and the electronics in my pedal failed due to water entering this box!! the car went into limp mode until i ordered another pedal... £45 from VAGPARTS.COM

However if your engine bay by the battery isnt flooded it could may well be the ECU box is letting in water... it isnt uncommon.. a bit of a pain to remove but if you search on this site i'm sure theres something to help you..

A word of warning about your carpet.. mine was drenched and when i thought it had dried with lots of cloths and hairdryer action it was drenched again in no time...!! basically underneath the carpet contains a couple of deep craters where water would collect... you need to lift up the carpet and get all the water out and allow this to dry otherwise you wont remove the water and the carpet will begin to smell of damp... it is amazing to see how thick the foam is underneath the carpet and mine collected nearly 10 litres !!

    hope yours isnt as bad...

    good luck

    tim

    Hi,
I had the same problenm. It basically started when the dealer changed the wiper linkage. Anyway the problem turned out to be that when replacing the linkage the dealer has loosened the ecu housing to make room to remove the assembly. When replacing the ecu box/ housing they have kinked the foam seal, hence when the car was parked facing up hill water came into the driver's foot well, and was dripping off of the pedals. I have just fixed the problem by removing the housing and correcting the kink in the seal.

Hope this hepls others who have a leak but do not have blocked scuttle drains.

I have just cured a similar problem, well no water in the car but there was some leakage in to the ecu box area.Look out for any damage to the relays as 2 of mine were at some time under water and I was getting a battery drain due to this problem,so if any one gets some wobbly electrics this could be it.My car is a 2002 V6 diesel.

Snap, had the same problem with mine.
I have no idea how the seal got kinked, but I had the screen removed and re-sealed before I found the ECU box seal.
I removed the lower dash trim under the steering wheel had had a look with a torch while a mate played with a hosepipe.
I believe the ECU box part No has changed, could be that the new part No has been updated to get a better waterproof seal.

Similar problem with my old passat, water collecting under the battery and corroding the multi-pin under the fuse box, limp mode every time it rained! Have heard water slushing around that area in my A4, need to investigate before it gets too bad.

Do you have sunroofs, I had a problem like this and cured it by fixing a kinked drainange pipe that drains water away from the sunroof mechnism, Pulled the rooflining down and put a small jubilee clip around the kink to straighten it out. There are four drain pionts on these sunroofs unfortunately the two at the back of the mechnism are hard to reach.
